As I explained in a [previous video ](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1nq5w2o/karen_national_liberation_army_ethnic_militia/)in the same area, most factions of varying ideologies and religion fight against the junta. The Karens in this case are a mix of Christians, Buddhists, and some [Muslims](https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/10/19/muslims-join-buddhist-christian-fighters-to-topple-myanmars-military) with a common ethnic heritage and desire for regional autonomy. They get their weapons from a mix of capturing junta stocks and smuggling (mostly from the Thai border; hence the M16s). The Kachin Independence Army also has Protestant Christians fighting with a multiethnic and multifaith PDF (KIA also has ethnic Gurkhas). The Communist Party of Burma is taking part in the fight, as well as the Anti-Fascist Internationalist Front of leftist foreign volunteers (all without support from China). All of them believe in either federalism or autonomy.
Some people described this war as Syria in a jungle, but the sides are way more convoluted. For example, many of the large Rohingya armed groups [actually do not fight the junta anymore ](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/myanmars-frontline-rohingya-fighters-junta-face-common-enemy-2024-09-06/)(since February 2024) despite the civilians of that group facing one of the largest ethnic cleansing campaigns in the world since the 2010s (arguably since the 1980s). Also, multiple groups of otherwise conflicting ethnicities, religions, and political thoughts are overall united in the goal of overthrowing the junta and instituting a non-unitary system.

The United Wa State Army does not fight the junta, but they do [supply weapons](https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/myanmar-china-watch/under-chinese-pressure-myanmars-uwsp-cuts-off-support-to-allied-ethnic-armies.html); however, Chinese interference has dealt a blow (causing inflation in black market gun prices). China used to support some anti-junta militias, but those militias now either denounce China or stopped fighting altogether.
