      It’s so silly, this has been tried and testing in lots of European democracies, they haven’t turned into authoritarian states.

      He could turn around his poor polling numbers by implementing decent policy that actually improve people’s lives. Reopening sure start centres and lifting the two child benefit cap for starters. But yeh, digital Ids is what will help.

      No one wants it, it doesn’t work and it’s not going to improve anyone’s life.

      Someone somewhere in some position of power has been changing or pushing the legal system to act against civilians in manners no one wants or have voted for. The obvious reasons being greater control over narrative and greater income via fines.

      No one in their right mind should trust implementation or the motive behind these ID cards. We already have passports and national insurance numbers.

      Government will ignore it, but that’s a hell of a lot of petitions in such a short amount of time.

      It’s another one of those policies which doesn’t particularly please anyone (I’ve never actually seen someone say ‚I think ID cards are great‘, at best just ‚They aren’t as bad as people say‘), but it does piss people off enough to not vote for the party. The Starmer Special, really.

      That said why does Starmer feel the need to screw himself once again by pushing something he should know doesn’t have any consensus and rubs people the wrong way? He really is politically stupid or what?

      It’s the OSA all over again. Polling shows widespread support for this kind of policy, and has done for years, but the terminally online denizens of Reddit will insist no one wants it.

      The problem with petitions is that they’re always ignored for a great many to have quit getting involved with the things of which undoubtedly has contributed to the rising lack of trust in government

      Aren’t ID cards just an extension of the data the state, and some private companies, have on every person already from birth until death?

      I live in South Korea where everyone has an ID card. It makes everything so much smoother and integrated. The majority of the rest of the world has them too. The opposition to this makes no sense to me.

      I just know its going to be extremely expensive and wont stop the boats.

      Most of the people who rent houses and give jobs to illegals know they are illegal.

      Anything Tony Blair is for I am against.

      From what I understand the German model of ID for online was basically a code you could use to prove you were 18+. It didn’t care or need to know about where you put it on what website or whatever. That’s what they should have had as way to implement age verification that would actually work. The adults who don’t want their porn and their Reddit and their random normal thing to have their actual ID placed with a third party could have just used a government agnostic code to prove 18+.

      Instead we got the worst of both worlds. We got a system which is trivially easy to bypass but frustrating for the specific sites that don’t like VPNs. Like YouTube.

      And now they’re putting this id in place to make sure people renting or working are digitally registered but they’re using some shitty sketch of a app as a thought as to how to implement it.

      Just use the government gateway id.

      But what I don’t like is that they want to deanonymise social media

      Reddit would be absolutely barren without anon accounts by subject matters experts (and commenters, and bots). Basically large chunks of LLM data is built off the back of Reddit.

      Remove anonymity from social media and all you do is make people that are actually smart stop writing honestly anymore. And that cedes the field to confident morons that don’t care if their name is associated to their opinion.

      And the worst thing is we don’t even get the super fast cheap municipal/local internet as a concession

      Atleast Korea with its ID internet had it be super fast. Even if it sold out

      We don’t even get that.

      I understand they want to be shown to tackle illegal workers but it’s a shell game because everyone knows just how much industry is actually run off the back exploited foreign workers.

      And people don’t want to be honest about it. Yes this is how a modern neoliberal economy works. The poor get exploited or immigrants get exploited.

      The alternative which is like a authoritarian socialist one does not work without having brutalism and rights reduction be a key feature. You would have a standard of Living cap that is only bypassed if you’re a party apparatchik.

      Anyway the point is, everything about the way these things was and are being implemented is dumb, and it is dumb on purpose.
