They just phased out BRPs for EVisas? Anybody who needs to show their right to rent, work, stay needs to show a share code, so what’s the point of this?

How will this stop illegal immigration exactly?
We already have checks on the right to work and live in the UK. Can we not be left alone and just exist.
This is a step towards social credit systems imo.
      Too dystopian for me.

Loss of privacy disguised as protecting our interests. The world sure loves a Trojan horse.

    4. They’re using this illegal immigration issue as a smokescreen in order to get more control over the population. Definitely feels like they are deliberately causing anxiety amongst people so when things like this are introduced then there won’t be a fuss made.

10 years time: yeah so we accidentally emailed all your information to the TALIBAN 5 years ago.

    6. We have it in Poland since decades (search for PESEL, every citizen has assigned unique number :)). No controversies at all. Pro-state solution.

I’ll never understand why people from the Anglosphere freak out about ID cards, when literally every country in Europe has them.

    8. RoadToRuin86 on

It’s amazing how Labour under Starmer are just speed running all of the least popular actions from the previous conservative governments. It’s absolutely mad.

    9. In other news, UK PM Starmer declares that from now on crime will be considered illegal

    10. More like further controlling the law abiding citizens. He can fuck right off.

    11. Reverse_Quikeh on

They will spend all this time and money but 20p says Military ID cards still wont be considered a valid form of ID within the UK.

    12. studiesinsilver on

This is purely a tool for surveillance and control. This serves no purpose for illegal migration, especially considering what measures are already in place. Insane, Orwellian move by Labour.

    13. I’m not particularly concerned if I have a digital ID or not. This is after all 2025 and it was only a matter of time before a government decided to utilise technology in the governing of the citizens. It kind of makes a lot of sense.

What bothers me is that Labour never mentioned this once in their manifesto during the election and it’s clearly become one of their main goals.

That to me seems incredibly sneaky, this was obviously their plan from day 1. It’s all far too organised for it not to have been.

So the issue is the public never got a say on this, and that’s worrying to me.

    14. Starmer has stocks in Reform UK or something, there’s no way someone could go from one unpopular decision to the next without doing some damage control.

    15. FuriousSpud on

What’s with all the bedwetting over this? Common sense measure already in place in the majority of Europe.

    16. EyePiece108 on

As a Brit, it’s about time. It’s 2025 and most of Europe does this. I don’t buy into the drama about having ID cards.

There’s a reason why illegal immigrants come here and don’t stay in France, it’s so much easier to disappear into British society.

    17. kajokarafili on

How does that crack down illegal immigrants?
Who’s coming from the boats are claiming asylum and they’re covered.
Those who work on the black market…even without digital ID would be easy to prove if they have right of work from whoever hires them, but they just don’t go through the process, which they would not do even with the digital ID.

    18. Slow_And_Difficult on

Right to work and right to rent checks already exist. If you’re happy employing or renting to illegal immigrants you’re hardly going to be bothered about a plastic card.

    19. A_Sweatband on

This will get hacked immediately, it won’t change immigration, it’ll just add another unfixable hole in personal security.

    20. Sure_Alternative8600 on

They will inevitably use this to monitor you for other things. E.g. riots, anyone seen out on certain areas after curfew will be penalized. It isn’t for immigration

    21. ArcanaOfApocrypha on

What if you don’t have the internet or a device capable of displaying Digital ID? My granda still uses a Nokia brick and doesn’t have internet access.

    22. Ok-Sorbet-5506 on

How will this crack down on illegal immigration though? I don’t get the correlation between an ID system which already exists in other forms and illegal immigration.

    23. NegevThunderstorm on

You could also just deport illegal immigrants and stop people hopping off of rafts.

    24. Finland the country voted the happiest in the world 7 years in a row.. Have an ID card used for all their national services. They arent living in fear by a measly ID card… The brits though….

All shitless and it’s quite comical :

      They’ll have my data!

      They’ll sell my data!

Hackers will easily get my data!

      They’re controlling me more!

      Blah blah blah.

The reason why this country is so fucked up currently is the sheer negativity to anything. You’re constantly being inundated with fear, you can’t live without it now and don’t know how to react otherwise. You need to cry, you need to panic. Everything is always out to get you.

No wonder reform has gotten more voters, you’re all shitless and desperate to be saved by whoever bullshits and says they will. You’re all crippled with fear the right have created and now desperate for their tit to suckle on and then stroke your shitless heads. Modern Brits should be ashamed of themselves.

    25. Jesus fucking christ.

People hiring illegal immigrants aren’t going to stop hiring them because they don’t have this authoritarian bullshit.

They just pay them cash or use modern slavery.

This is such a shit idea under the guise of reducing immigration beause successive governments have lost control of the borders. Just like the online safety bill under the guise of child safety, it’s all bullshit.

    26. No_Emu_3822 on

If anybody believes this is anything to do with cracking down on immigration then you should be ashamed of yourself for being as thick as two planks. Just when you thought Starmer couldn’t get any more egotistical and arrogant and deluded, he doubles down. Coming soon: „want to log into any web site? Your digital ID will save you typing a user ID in … see? What a great device!“

    27. Hey kids, we have a brand new policy, brought to you by the people who’ve never had a real job!

    28. EquivalentAcadia9558 on

Yeah fuck off, this is gonna just lead to more crack downs on freedom, all veiled in the new excuse alongside protect the kids. Sacrifice your rights and we’ll take away the bad people. God I fucking hate this government, and the next one ain’t gonna be better.

    29. Low-Priority7941 on

      How will stop illegal immigration?

I can see the human rights court cases now when the NHS declines to treat an illegal who doesnt have a card. We cant even evict people who murder others!

    30. jimbojetset35 on

Why not just stop the boats… or is that too simple… or is it because that does not allow corrupt politicians to get backhanders for digital ID contracts.

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    31. Penny_PackerMD on

Lol the UK claim it’s to stop illegal immigrants, Australia claim it’s to keep kids safe online. What will be the next furphy? Distopia

    32. geoffwolf98 on

      Large IT project – tick
      Government Programme – tick
      hence
Massive failure and over runs costing billions – tick

    33. Elusive_Zergling on

So, theoretically speaking, if I don’t have digital ID, I won’t be able to get a cash-in-hand job from an unscrupulous employer like I can at the moment? This guy.

    34. How handy! Just after the online safety act.

Now they can track everything you do and say online.

    35. VagueSomething on

Starmer really wants to be hated. This won’t help with immigration and is just forcing it through with such a claim.
