Great, always wanted one. I remember wishing for one as a child when blowing out my birthday candles.
Digital drivers licences were coming this winter anyway (which I’d definitely use) so I couldn’t give less of a fuck tbh I don’t know why people are being very overly dramatic about this other than force of habit
Just in time for Reform at the next election. Sigh.
I don’t see why this is a bad thing, many countries in Europe and the rest of the world have this and it doesn’t make them dictatorships.
How long until it’s revealed that it’ll be Palantir in charge of creating the database?
Well, the crowd that screams that voters should not have to present ID should now not have a problem with votors having to present id.
A much bigger issue is the USA, but with elections under more and more scrutiny, the reactions will be telling.
Not trying to antagonise but why are folks so negative about this?
Folks like Apple Pay and Google Play and are happy to use digital wallets for boarding passes and cards why not a drivers license / passport?

Nonetheless it’s probably useful to have an easily accepted ID card without having to pass a driving test.

Interesting that the Telegraph are quite careful not to be too obvious whether they are for or against this, unlike their usual stories.
They’re probably waiting to see how their readers react before they attack (or support) it.
If the legislation is well written (big if) and it’s limited to situations where people have to prove right to work, then I don’t see how Reform and their newspaper backers can criticise it, unless they want to claim they are pro illegal immigrants being able to work?
Obviously there is the slippery slope argument, but that can exist with any system of checks.
So if we have a digital ID do I still need to verify under the OSA because surely by having a digital ID to access the internet my IP should know I’m an adult and thus the random websites collecting your data on behalf of China and Russia shouldn’t need your proof of identity
Genuinely curious – how is this different from a passport? (I get not everyone drives / kids etc so a driving license doesn’t work)

Im not concerned about digital ID as a concept (practicalities of data security aside). However as a trans person, I also fear this to be implemented in such a way that forcibly outs me disproportionately to when such info would actually be required.
I remember in my nativity play as a child I was playing a Roman who was ordering people to register their identities with the Roman empire.

So presumable all these countries in Europe with this system have a very small number of illegal immigrants and a very small proportion of those are working right?

What some ppl fail to grasp is this will be used eventually to track everything you do, limit your movement, limit your spending and give you a ration card of carbon credits that limits your freedom to do anything.

Labour have had a hard on for ID cards for decades. I’ve never understood why.
Labour, being Labour, will somehow fuck it up so it ens up being misused.
This has the potential to bring a lot of joined up government to work and to make life fairer and easier for UK citizens.
It also has the potential to drop everyone’s personal information right into the lap of the highest bidder. Or to provide unnecessary user access to my personal data like the Regulation of Investigatory Powers act did.
There needs to be sufficient regulation about what data is stored and what organisations are allowed access to what type of data.
Ideally this should be an internal [gov.uk](http://gov.uk) IT project and not given to Fujitsu, Palantir, HP et al.
Have something like this called SingPass here in Singapore. Great for logging into official stuff when needed. Just use the app to scan the SingPass login QR code, authenticate with your finger print and then you’re in.
The cards aren’t the problem. I have lots of forms of ID and a tracking device on me most of the time in the form of a mobile phone.
My problem would be if there were a requirement to have it on you when in public. If I’m just going about my lawful business then I’ve no reason to prove my identity to anyone (outside of specific legal arrangements).
We already have passports and driving licences, this is pretty much a non-event.
As much as I don’t trust this government with anything to do with the internet, and think they have an Orwellian approach to our online freedoms – it’ll be nice to finally not have to carry a wallet everywhere.
The only reason I still have one is on the off chance I get ID’d buying vapes and alcohol, the rest of the time I just use my apple wallet.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist or anything but I won’t be having one of these. Compulsory or not, I’m not going to download one to my phone because I don’t need it. The government already know who I am.
They’re not going to stop small boat crossings either.

There are so many questions that need to be answered.
Where are they getting the data from in order to make this? How do you verify people are using their own ID? How do you stop illegal immigrants renting IDs like they already do? How easy will it be to update your information? Does this not infringe GDPR’s right to erasure?
So it’s mandatory and we have to pay for it? Cheers Keith, yet another useless expense on top of everything else.
What if you don’t have or want a digital footprint or have no access to technology.
You’ll be amazed to learn that there’s an entire generation who don’t have a mobile phone, computer or any means of accessing the online world.
Is this meant to serve any purpose or fix a problem we currently have?
