Another unilateral concession ‚in the interest of securing a deal‘. This dispute is decades old; what indication is there that *this* administration is going to change their stance compared to when America actually viewed us as friends?
For context, this isn’t a Trump thing. These specific duties have been in place off and on since 1982, when the US first determined that we subsidize our lumber industry. Basically, there’s a harvesting fee that’s set by the government. In the US, the same fee is set by the market. The Americans regards this as a subsidy, and international trade law/agreements generally permit countries to offset subsidies with tariffs (known as „countervailing duties“).
There have been a number of non-binding decisions against the US over the years, all of which have been ignored (although, notably, we lost the most recent case, where we were found to be in breach of the since-expired Softwood Lumber Agreement). My understanding, as a non-expert, is that the American position is probably wrong, but not completely absurd.

Why are they picking on one industry and not the other?
Wonder where we will capitulate next? Doubling our purchase of f35s instead of cutting the order down to only 16 we have payed for? Maybe giving free access to American fair exporters to flood us with crap milk and cheese that can’t legally be defined as cheese? Build a wall and pay them for it? Absolutely sick of this shit.
