As a lifelong pageant fan and past state constant in teen and miss divisions, the miss USA system has been a shit show for a while now.
Pre-“I am silenced”: So Max Sebrechts, the husband of former Miss USA president Crystle Stewart and president of miss USA from November 2020-aug 2023, was accused of sexually harassing multiple contestants from the 2021 pageant.
Furthermore, crystal stewart faced a lot of favoritism and rigging allegations, they even went to court and hired a third party investigator. The third party said it didn’t find evidence of rigging, but also that year’s winner was heads and tails above everyone else, she even went on to win miss universe so she probably was shown favoritism lol though unethical, I don’t think that’s illegal
Now getting to your post: Anyway, after all that drama crystal left and a new owner, lylah rose, took over. It was after she took over that the newly crowned miss USA, Noelia Voigt’s, stepped down and wrote the “I am silenced” letter. She and the miss teen USA winner both gave up their crowns shortly after winning, which is a massive deal in the pageant world. Some of these women work their whole lives for this. Their moms did a tv interview and spoke out because their daughters signed nda’s.
It is alleged that Rose was just bad at her job and mismanaged these girls. The moms said that their girls were subject to bullying from the organization, which was also said to have been a toxic environment at the time. I believe it, pageant queens are already under a lot of pressure to be perfect. On top of being told to push whatever narrative rose wanted.
The worst part, they sent this miss USA (Noelia) alone with a driver to an event who sexually assaulted her. I am assuming the organization tried to sweep this under the rug and that is the real reason both the miss USA and miss teen USA stepped down.
The organization was also owned by trump once upon a time, there are some contestants who came out and spoke on his, well, general creepiness. He walked in on girls while changing (including teen constants) and tried to kiss at least one on the lips.
All to say, miss USA has had some problems. It’s not in a great spot right now either. You’ve got contestants state hopping illegally, so competing in multiple states even though they don’t live there and you can only compete in 2 states per year per byways, and there is hardly any accountability. Every state is making up its own rules on residency and some states don’t even have a director at the moment. Also, six states haven’t even had a competition yet and the national pageant is next month lol
