If this happens it is fine.
It isn’t necessarily the best option for the military or our budget, but it might be the best option for maintaining and building alliances which is just as important, if not more so.
Considering the Koreans actually have a track record of delivering on time and on budget … maybe we should try that. I know, those are unheard of concepts for Canadian defence procurement.
This is a great plan – hedge our bets – buy the reliable Korean sub for the Pacific and then the high tech wonder sub with a new hull form for the Atlantic.
The logisitics cost in maintaining a sub fleet is huge and it’s something that Canada will be stretched to afford. Going further by doubling the required training, parts sparing, etc. is ridiculous. Not to mention the potential financial and operational costs by mistakes made by someone primarily familiar with the other platform. The idea that Canada is going to go from an underequipped military to one with a diversified platform in costly key capabilities is laughable.
One new type of submarine fleet will be a strain but two? Ridiculous, where is this idea coming from that there will be this huge pivot and we’ll have the personel, knowledge, training, parts for two huge feats in the military of all places. Crazy dumb which means it’ll probably happen.
Dumbest mistake ever. 2 separate supply chains, training streams, let alone moving personnel around when you have critical shortages in a trade or position.
We are too small to diversify.
To go from the utter boondoggle of the Victoria subs to then maintaining a fleet of two different ones?
Well, nothing more Canadian than that, I suppose. Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
I wonder if this is how they are trying to justify wanting to buy into the German-Norwegian submarine program, but realizing that the Germans are going to struggle with delivery schedules.
Canada’s procurement process is counter-intuitive to the whole purpose of having a modern military at the ready. Endless debates, reviews, studies, consultants involved. A new government will come in and order another review of contracts and budgets. In the meantime, our underfund military sits idle and obsolete unable to defend our sovereignty. Canada can’t count on the US to help us. Pick one submarine, get the F-35s already.
