What sort of hours were they working though?
If anyone deserves this sort of money, it’s medical consultants. They put in years and years of training (and that’s ongoing), they work really hard, they have amazing talent & skill, and the stress levels can be enormous.
I love it when a media source try and infuriate people with a headline like this but the public say “good for them”. Doctors work hard in shitty conditions. Id love it if a nurse or pharmacist could make as much but I wont begrudge a doctor for making good money when so many are leaving the country.
It takes 12-15 years to be a radiologist so I don’t care if a few are paid €500k especially if it is overtime to meet demand. Ireland is a rich country. Nurses should be paid a lot more as well.

If we want some of the best doctors in the world we have to pay some of the best salaries in the world
Consultant (which can take 20+ years of extremely gruelling education) base pay is 250k.
Everything over that they do extra. This person has likely saved countless lives. Good for them
As a partner to a doctor. I can assure you they deserve as much as they can get. Unless you’re married to a doctor or friends with one, you truly do not see the countless hours that go into the profession. The doctor being on site at a hospital, clinic or practice is only part of it.
Never mind the years in college, exams after and moving up through intern, SHO, Reg, Specilist Reg and then Consultant. It’s a good 12-15 years of someone life to get there.
Perhaps if they saved your life doing a complex procedure you might say they are underpaid
Not to mind they are paying high tax on this income which is around 485,000 in tax.
I had a chat once with an obstetrician….
The one real chat I had with a doctor. Looked like an easy gig to me… a handful of patients late in his career. Nice house and car and 4 kids of his own all in private school
He then told me after my kid he was removing a stillborn baby next and I was a hard one…..
I then said yea keep your car and house no fucking way could you pay me to do that.
I’ll work my normal high-stress IT job and whine about 40 to 50 hours with no overtime.
Some of these consultants are 80 hours plus a week.

Nowadays titles like this truly feel so lazy from the news reporting, like, the true enemies are those who never needed to work a day in life and they never will need to work a day for their 20 generations down the line. And yet, media doesn’t say a shit about them.
„Person who’s career is to help the sick“ really doesn’t roll off the tongue quite like „Consultant“, does it?
Consultant almost makes it sound like they work for EY and make PowerPoint slides all day.
Many years ago my son was a cardiac patient in Our Lady’s. Sometimes he end up going in for 2-3 days stays if needed. I swear, never once was his consultant not in the hospital in the few years we had of this. The man never left the place. Weekends, evenings – he was always there. And then he had to make life impacting decisions about the lives of babies, and slice into them when needed (thankfully my son avoided the slicing open, they went up his femoral artery for his treatment). I know this doesn’t apply to all consultants, but you can’t pay doctors like my son’s cardiologist enough.
Consultants are also responsible for the actions and decisions of all the non consultant doctors working in their team, that’s a level of stress I would never want to have.
They’ve a constantly changing roster of doctors, they just get used to them and the 3/6/12 month rotation is finished and now they’ve a new team, and law of averages some of them might be dud doctors.
fair play. hopefully they stick around. we’ve a big shortage of Doc’s.
They received 963k and would have paid 480k in taxes on their wages plus all the other tax they pay for living in Ireland etc

its mad the amount of work most docs do. My gf is a SHO, thats 2 level below consultant and she works 50hrs a week. 1-2 weeks a month will be nights and as usual understaffed.
Consultants are often on a 24hr shifts for 3 days a week – they can go home etc but if a patient gets serious, come back and treat them. Maddening the amount of studying you need to become a SHO, let alone a consultant. You’d be 50 by the time you become a consulatant and I dont know if your body can keep up for very long what that stress and schedule.
I had a relative who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The consultant oncologist pretty much gave them seven years of extra time with a fairly good quality of life which included travel and getting married. Before that, upon diagnosis, it seemed my relative had only months left. That consultant and many like him are saving countless lives every year, and are also having to deal with cases where nothing more can be done. They train for decades so that people like my relative can eek a few years more out of their lives with relative comfort and for that my family is grateful and think that saving lives is worth paying for
Years of study, couple decades of experience in a tough field and then they end up paying more tax in a year on that than the average person will earn in a decade. Not sure what I’m supposed to be angry about?
Fair play to them. They earn big money by actually helping lots of people. There are plenty more people earning much more than them by doing more harm than good for society.
Consultants found and cured my cancer.
People have inflated wages in tech and finance etc.
I have no problem with medical consultants earning this money. They should be the biggest earners imo.
I have several friends who are now consultants. After their training in Ireland, they spent between 1-3 years doing fellowships abroad to gain extra skills and training not available in Ireland before becoming consultants. They were not paid at all for this time. Now they are consultants and continue to work incredibly hard. I don’t begrudge them a single cent.
Theirs plenty of money to fix the health system, they just don’t Wana fix it.
Same as other first world countries, pushing everyone towards private healthcare by poorly running the public health services
The big issue is that the HSE is competing, not with continental European medical systems and the NHS to retain staff, but with the other anglophone countries that have enormously high pay.
It’s also not unreasonable to have a discussion about consultants pay and conditions here. I don’t like this thing of shutting down conversation and saying “but the save lives” – that’s true but it’s also possible that very high pay rates are limiting capacity.
The U.S. shuts down discussion on ever rising healthcare costs with similar arguments.
The costs can’t just keep inflating – the pot of money is limited.
From what I’ve seen is the T&Cs and work rotas and the way the career paths operate are terrible and stuck in some bygone era, so they keep throwing more money to retain people, without resolving any of the other issues that might make the jobs attractive.
That’s good for them, well deserved. An example of how years of studies and hard work are rewarded. They could earn the same or more in private hospitals or in different countries, I’m glad they save lives in Ireland. Is someone trying to stir some controversy here?

So basically, they don’t have enough consultants, and they’re forced to pay the existing doctors to stretch themselves and cover the gaps. In the meantime, the gaps cannot be closed permanently because of the hiring freeze. Typical HSE dysfunction.
For the most part, they earn it.
Consultants are not only experts in their field but are also usually working on various medical projects.
Let them have their high salary.
My mum recently had to have major surgery in UHL. The consultant was in late on Saturday night to check up on her, after spending the day working in Nenagh.
I’ll happily rant all day long about the HSE, but the medical staff at the coal face are incredible and can never be paid enough for what they do…
