It’s beyond me why they haven’t assessed the damage Russia’s caused Ukraine so far and taken that to court, and seized Russian assets accordingly. That’s fully in line with international law.

Things like International payment system must be free from any intervention and interference. It must be a global good and not a tool wielded by a single country to be used for leverage or coercion or blackmail.
Today Russia’s assets are seized, Tommorow US can do this to any country they desire to put pressure in order achieve their desired outcomes .This is the exact trigger that made Central banks buy maximum gold to derisk themselves from any uncertainties.
Even Afghanistan’s assets are seized by US and most definitely will be used to negotiate to re enter in Bagram airbase.

A law that makes crimes go unpunished or even helps a criminal should not exist at least without serious changes.
On the same note an entity as hostile as Russia with the intentions Russia has should not have any protections on their assets, they gave up on it when they decided they want what others have and they’ll take it by force.

What exactly are the consequences for disrespecting international law? I am aware of the implied consequence of nobody adhering to them, but what are the concrete consequences a state or it’s leadership can face when breaching international law?
Law is great, and I sincerely believe the world is better when humans agree upon and follow laws that outline how our society works. But it’s undeniable that without enforcement or consequences laws are completely toothless, no more than a suggestion that can be disavowed whenever it’s convenient. While I appreciate the concept of international law the way it supposedly ‚works‘ seems incredibly naive or deceptive, depending on your views.
On a legal level I’m not saying it would be OK to breach international law and seize frozen Russian assets, but I am saying that doing something like this should be a possible consequence outlined in international law for those states that are found in violation.
On a moral level I still think it’s the right thing to do. In the absence of defined punishment for Russias transgressions we should improvise in the punishment, and seizing assets hits them where it hurts, making it an effective consequence that will hopefully provide deterrence for the future.
