The town is saying the exact opposite, kids are always in front of social media – when they occasionally go to the theatres in the dark with all big bucket of popcorn in front of them it feels different and special because of social media, not despite it

Kids don’t have $45 for an hour and a half of silent entertainment. That’s roughly 3 months of ad free Netflix.

People would gladly go to the movies if we had disposable income like existed in the 70s 80s and 90s.

I haven’t been to the movies in years where some teenagers aren’t chronically checking their phones. It’s a full on addiction.

    4. Individual_Respect90 on

Yeah you used to be able to go to the movies and see movies you weren’t even sure if they would be good. Unless I am sure the movie is going to be absolutely amazing I am not going. I’ll wait 2-3 months and stream it.

    5. Because going to the movies is like 50 bucks for one person. It’s insane now.

    6. HussingtonHat on

No it won’t, it’ll just do movies based on properties kids are obsessed with, that I couldn’t give a fuck about. I’m kind of amazed a Fornight movie hasn’t happened yet on that basis alone.

Coming soon to tick toks near you, Hollywood produced seconds long content

So she noticed that celebrity culture and movies are not worth any time? When you can’t even sustain yourself in this economy 🤔

    9. The_Dice_Dangler on

Kids also don’t have an attention span anymore everything is immediate and they consume in small content.

A good bit of movies aren’t great and everything’s more expensive

Paying more for worse quality just ain’t it

Maybe if Reese would put her damn spoon down she’d realize that

    11. Kids don’t have 80 bucks to spend on a heavily marketed remake of a remake. Want a solution? Make better films and show them at a more reasonable price.

    12. Maybe it’s that Hollywood makes bland remakes and focuses on hollow IP. That’s such an idiotic statement.

I know it messes with the industry but Jesus Christ are kids in theatres annoying as hell and just ruin the experience for everyone.

Watching Jurassic world rebirth was the final straw for me, had one kid behind me giving his mom a running commentary of everything happening and a few rows in front a bunch of teens more interested in google maps and talking random shit.

Then another kid who cried when he saw the mutant dinosaurs at the end

      0/10 experience

I’m GenX and *I* no longer go to the movies. For the most part they are crappy retreads of stories that were done better already.

If kids don’t watch movies its b/c parents don’t sit down with them to do so. If you keep sending them off w/a tablet that’s the stuff they will decide they like watch. My toddler likes the Beach Boys b/c I play them for him. He wants to learn about football b/c I will explain to him what’s happening when I watch. He likes movies b/c I sit and watch with him. The only time he actually wants to watch brainrot garbage is when my wife and I are too busy. Otherwise he wants to do everything we do.

    16. TheOldJawbone on

Reese is really missing what is going to make Hollywood change if some other things don’t happen.

    17. Lanky_Instance3121 on

Maybe make better movies with better sets, effects, and actors/actresses and lower the astronomical snack prices while we are at it.

Also, what teen movies have been made recently? I remember seeing coming of age or romcoms when I was a preteen/teen. What is there now?

    18. Of the 10 highest grossing films last year globally, 6 were kids/family films (Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, Mufasa: The Lion King, Kung Fu Panda 4, Sonic The Hedgehog 3). This year, 4 of the top 5 are kids/family films (Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Stitch, A Minecraft Movie, How To Train Your Dragon), with the other film being Jurassic World Rebirth, which will have a large number of younger viewers despite not being explicitly made for them. The evidence doesn’t actually support this theory, you just need to make stuff that actually interests a younger audience, and they will see it in droves.

A lot of Hollywood seems like it can’t be arsed at the moment so why should we?

    20. I take my kids to the movies occasionally but it’s expensive… they do enjoy it, sometimes my daughter would get ants in her pants an hour in because she was like 5, and the movies aren’t as good anymore. It’s like $100 for my family to go though, it’s not really worth it

    21. You could have the most engaging, enthralling, captivating film released in years, and inside of half an hour, you’d have kids reaching for their phone to check their Insta. TikTok, YouTube, and all of these new hyper trend short videos have gotten kids accustomed to short bursts of entertainment and in turn their attention span has plummeted.

    22. Business-Employ-1599 on

There is literally a thing that says the exact opposite from Denis Villeneuve that Genz crave longer films that Oppenheimer was most popular with young people.

    23. Imcrappinyounegative on

My kids go to the movies all the time. Not sure what she’s on about.

    24. The Tik Tok effect.

Social media and bite-sized, short-form video content have rotted brains and dramatically shortened attention spans.

You have a whole generation that’s become so accustomed to instant gratification that if a piece of content doesn’t get to the point in 30-60 seconds, they’re ready to move on. Many of them simply can’t focus long enough to build out and explore a story across a 90-minute feature.

    25. danielbearh on

I tried to go to the movies for the first time in years. The Roses. It’s already out of the theater?

No one is going to the movies because the offerings suck.

    26. But we’ll happily binge a 12-hour season of episodes. Hollywood didn’t even cater to kids until the 1980s. They shouldn’t be focusing on them. The fact of the matter is movie theaters are going the way of drive-ins, which ironically made a comeback thanks to COVID. People have giant screen TVs with high definition in their homes with surround sound. They’re pretty much getting the movie getting experience for free any time they want. If anything, Hollywood is going to have to start catering to them. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy going to theaters for special events but I, like most people, are over going for every new film that comes out. It’s overpriced, people are rude, and hey, at home I can hit pause and use the bathroom without missing a thing.

Did we trip and fall into a 2010 hole or what? This insight is so old Indiana Jones is probably looking for it.

    28. Southern_Anywhere_65 on

I mean, it changes every generation. Also K-pop demon hunters made a buttload of money when it was still available to watch on Netflix the same weekend so I don’t know how valid that statement that kids don’t go to the movies is

    29. Top5hottest on

A few years ago i would agree with her.. but personally im seeing a bit of an uptick from the kids around me.

    30. charliekwalker on

Movies are far too expensive for what they offer to consumers. People still spend money, but what they spend it on changes over time.

    31. Yes, let’s blame the kids. Clearly they’re responsible for the derivative drivel oozing from Hollywood. The issue is both simple and complex. Simply, we can blame the studios for being lazy cash-grabbing, soulless hacks, recycling plots, cycling neverending sequels, and creating movies that are little more than an endless stream of references without including meaningful content. The issue becomes more complex when we consider the movie theater experience: outdated spaces with small, uncomfortable, often filthy seats. Why go out when you can stay home, sink into your recliner, and watch it on your 75-inch TV?

But sure, it is the kids‘ fault… We never should have left the kids in charge of Hollywood.

    32. spreerod1538 on

Don’t kids movies make the most money? 3 of the top 5 movies are kids movies this year..
