Convenient for the Brits to wash their hands off of the situation they created in the first place.
I think there should be a two state solution based on Pre-1967 borders. I just don’t see how it would ever happen at this point. The deal that Clinton and then Olmert offered were the best that Palestinians were ever going to get. Arafat accepted it at Taba too late and chose to involve himself during the Second Intifada, this really choked the peace process.
Israel is the nuclear hegemony in the Middle East, there is not much that anybody can do to make them accept a retraction from the Palestinian occupied territories or ethnic cleansing. It is a similar case with Russia’s occupation of Chechyna or China’s with Tibet. Those two parties were never offered any deal like Palestinians were though.
Geopolitics is a depressing affair.
Russia is a country we recognize, but we are condemning its leadership. It’s not that convoluted of an idea.
I wonder what effect this will have domestically in the UK. It will likely signal to Muslim/leftist constituents that they can effect change, encouraging them to further exercise political power. Given the state of British politics right now, I’m not sure how that will play out.
Why? The position is ‘there’s a country there but some of it is occupied by extremist.’
Same as current position on Ukraine, and in Syria and Iraq during ISIS.
