First if there’s some new space race the US is starting off on a bad foot. We no longer have a space organisation, after all NASA was designated an Intelligence organisation recently to not have to comply with certain laws. and there is no governmental agency less competent to achieve intended goals than an intelligence agency. Like we could designate a fortune teller agency and know they’d get more stuff done than an intelligence agency.
seems lost already to be honest given the blatant corruption of the administration, the priorities of the billionaire who seems to have purchased the country’s space capabilities and the general lack of competence that authoritarian dictatorships are known for.
Back in 2024 I thought we had a slim chance to be on the moon by 2030. Now I know we have zero chance. You just can’t compete with a dictatorship that has basically unlimited funds to throw at scientists and engineers to set them on a fixed program schedule for years. Not with the system we have now, where the President apparently keeps forgetting he is the one who green lit this program in the first place, and thinks everything that has someone who doesn’t agree with him politically leading it should be completely gutted. And now that the SpaceX lander will most likely not be ready by 2028 according to NASA’s own safety panel.
Currently testing the largest rocket ever, first stage already demonstrating reusability, second stage likely will be reusable by end of next year. But somehow we are behind in this imaginary space race because China might land on the moon before we do so for an eighth time, not to mention we likely will go to Mars in the next decade or two.
