Well, yeah that’s what they said would be the outcome when they laid out those conditions months ago. I can’t say I’m supposed this is what ended up happening.
I don’t think the government expected them to achieve the goals either, its just to toss the ball back in their court while doing something. I don’t know why folks were making a huge deal out of this like it was actually going to happen.
Will Canada recognize a Palestinian State’s right to sovereignty, and the right to defend itself? Because if not, then true statehood is off the table. Especially when it’s immediate neighbour is committing a genocide against them. There can’t be any half measures on this issue. It is fundamental to a State’s ability to exist.
Canada must make a clear stance: Yes, or No.
Regardless of one’s position on the Israel-Palestine conflict, I do not believe it is fair to the Palestinian people that Canada is using recognize of their statehood to put pressure on Israel. Threatening to recognize a people’s nationhood as a bargaining chip may be realpolitik but it certainly isn’t just.
Whether one agrees with Palestinian nationhood or not, it should be recognized on principal of whether or not it should be a country, not to exert pressure.
