Spare a thought for the poor board members whose profits just aren’t great enough yet. Imagine we lived in a country where the state (a competent one) was in control of basic necessities like power, public transport, health, bins etc… and they could run them off a not for profit principle and citizens would then have more disposable income to spend in the economy and not get screwed by private companies for shit they can’t live without.

What’s actually driving this? The price of gas seems to have been generally falling or had been more stable than even it spiked during the early stages of the Ukraine war.
Seems like the Irish market hasn’t really benefited from moving away from the single vertically integrated supplier model we had since the 1920s. Prices seem to be going up and up without any strategic planning as to how they’ll be driven down
I mean, yeah, it’s easy to just go “booo! Big corporations” but the Irish entities are all rather small, price takers on the global markets.
Something’s just not working in the interest of ensuring we have affordable, sustainable energy.
I’d like to see some in depth economic analysis of this because it’s not really good enough to just keep wringing our hands about it – it’s causing serious issues and making the country uncompetitive.
Press commentary is generally very superficial and seems uninformed. I’d like to see a report from an energy economist or someone who can really dig into it.

It’s a bit like something I saw yesterday, Circle K were offering 20c a litre off diesel and petrol all day yesterday, and my local increased it by 10c overnight so they’d cash it. Absolute greed.

this is what happened when they (ESB) were forced to stop being a semi state body and become „competitive“, the profits became more important than the service. They weren’t cheap but they also couldn’t gouge like this.
There should be massive protests outside their offices, people should not just be taking it.

How many more reasons do we need for our government to reform State-owned ESB from a for-profit/commercial company into a non-profit company??
Imagine if, instead of €700-800m profit each year given to government as dividends (the most regressive form of taxation possible), that money was used to lower prices for all Electric Ireland customers – with the aim of a non-profit ESB reducing prices as much as possible.
Not only that, but all the competing private energy companies would be forced to reduce their prices and profits in order to compete, multiplying the gains for everyday workers, carers, and small businesses.

Don’t let the providers tell you it’s increased costs of maintaining the network. That’s what your standing charge is for.
One month after I switched to them for a an advertised rate, and they hike it to higher than what I was paying elsewhere.
How is that even legal?

I personally would like to know where this ends. Like I’ll survive this year. I’ll survive another ten years of this. So there’s no immediate fear from me… but EVERYONE except the ultra wealthy are walking away with less and less money each month due to these price hikes on everything (rent, groceries and electricity being 3 big ones). At a certain point, even those currently doing well today will be struggling… and God knows how those already struggling will be doing by then.
Like where does it stop?

„Our Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) payment rate will remain at 19.5c per kWh for households exporting to the grid.“ Put simply, energy companies are increasing what they charge you but not what they pay you back. A 9.5% rise in retail energy prices without any corresponding increase in export payments is indefensible. This is precisely why legislation is needed to stop providers exploiting consumers – especially those who have invested heavily in reducing their own energy costs.

We have Europe to thank for this, they decided that the ESB was an unfair monopoly and that we needed a free energy market. All sounds great but in practice, not so much as the unit price of electricity has to be kept artificially high in order to keep the competition.

Also energia told me that the increase was due to storm eowyn earlier this year. [Which is bull since ESB said the cost would not be passed on.] (https://esb.ie/media-centre-news/press-releases/article/2025/02/07/statement-by-esb-on-costs-relating-to-storm-%C3%A9owyn)
