It’s long past time for Ottawa to recall Hoekstra and make it clear to him that his comments against this country and the government are not acceptable and welcome, and he can go back to Washington and have his diplomatic credentials revoked or he can shut up.

I mean what *possible* reasons could canadians have for suddenly disliking america? Do you think it might maybe have something to do with the orange spray tan coloured knife in our back?
Now, why would there be an anti-American sentiment in Canada?
Could it be because there’s an anti-Canadian sentiment in Washington? Could it be because of the explicit threats to our sovereignty coming out of Washington?
Now, I’m just a simple country lawyer, but it seems to me that the gentleman ambassador to Canada might be working for the reason many Canadians aren’t too happy with the States, but what do I know?
Lol. It’s cute that he thinks that we’re here to please him and his boss. This guy does not understand the assignment. An ambassador’s job is to understand the issues of the country to which he’s been assigned and ensure that gets understood his capital. Hoekstra has approached this from the other way around. He thinks his job is to project American interests into Canada.
I’m disappointed with neo-imperialist sentiment in America, so I guess we’re even.
How is it that the ambassador can communicate with his head so far up Dear Leader’s ass?

In context, Canada was facing annexation rhetoric and crippling tariffs. I’m guessing he would have preferred capitulation.

Relative to what? We’re objectively facing a more difficult trade relationship than we were when Biden was president.

In other words, expect there to be significant pressure to further diminish the relationship.
We’d be foolish to not do everything we can to diversify our trade relationships at this point. Any tighter integration with the USA is just going to make us vulnerable, and cause us to suffer.
It’s no surprise that Canadians are angry. Americans are the slightly overbearing but 100% dependable buddies who are great to hang out with. Then the Trump backstab. The cruelest backstab is from one’s closest friends or family. And now they complain that we’re not friendly? C’mon let me slap his face and complain about why he’s not friendly.
TL:DR: Asshole shouldn’t be surprised that being an asshole leads to people treating him like an asshole.
They do this on purpose. Of course there are many people better equipped to be diplomats and ambassadors. They are directed to be antagonistic and confrontational to the people they are ambassadors to. It’s the face they want to put forward.

Ten thousand years ago this guy would have been kicked down a well but that’s not conducive to modern trade negotiations.
Well maybe the American „government“ should stop acting anti-anyone who isn’t a billionaire authoritarian. Maybe if they’d start acting like a legitimate country again, we’d be okay with them again. We were fine with America under Biden, under Obama; hell, we were even, more or less okay with them under W.

I’m passionate about despising Pete Hoekstra down to my core. He is comfortably in the top 5 people most detrimental to Canada-U.S. relations.
If every country you have been an ambassador to hates you, maybe the problem is you.
Hoekstra treats Canadians like mushrooms. He keeps us in the dark and feeds us bullshit. He should just leave if he doesn’t like it.
I’m honestly glad we have this asshole as the US ambassador. I don’t want anyone on our side thinking we have, somehow, misunderstood the US. Or that their antagonism is over. We need enough for even the casuals to find and some are unplugged.
The more of an asshole he is. the more likely someone will hear and the longer a boycott on our side will last even if there aren’t tariffs. So, yeah, keep on antagonizing everyone over here.
