      Tomorrow marks 50 years since Fawlty Towers first aired in the UK, so to mark the occasion I asked the British public: what is your favourite sitcom?

      Rather than providing a list to choose from, we had respondents write their response – the results shown are as a % of those who gave an answer. Overall, Britons named 137 different sitcoms, but Friends topped the list at 14%, followed by Only Fools and Horses on 12%.

      Friends proves to be the dominant choice among Millennials (and women), joint top for Gen Z (along with Modern Family) and second among Gen X. For Boomers it is much further down the list; they are much more likely to answer Only Fools and Horses.

      A particularly noticeable age trend is whether people chose a British or American show as their favourite: 70% of Gen Z and 63% of Millennial Britons picked a US sitcom, while 69% of Gen X and 85% of Boomers picked a British show

      I’m pleased (and somewhat surprised) to see my own favourite show (Always Sunny) ranking as highly as it does, given the general perception that it’s a relatively niche show – I hope people enjoy the results!

      you can literally see the cultural cutoff -gen z/millennials heavy on us imports (friends, modern family, b99), while gen x/boomers stick with the super british stuff (only fools, fawlty towers, dad’s army). feels less like taste shift and more like what was actually on tv when they were in their 20s

      This Canadian is intrigued by the popularity of a show I’ve never heard of: Only Fools & Horses.

      Any Brits want to weigh in on it? What was so good about it? What’s it comparable to?

      Only Fools only has one transphobic scene in it, for a start!

      I find the fact that Mrs Browns Boys is on this list but not Father Ted or the IT Crowd very depressing.

      Only Fools is an absolutely outstanding TV achievement. You can see it in the numbers, people *loved* that show, it had heart, wit, cultural and social commentary above all it was and still is utterly hilarious telly. We’ll probably never see something like that again, a truly transcending British cultural institution.

      Of the shows in the graphic, I’d have been in the 0% of Millennials voting for Blackadder.

      I still know all the boomer stuff because of my parents and grandparents and I haven’t really seen any of the gen z or millennial stuff either 😂

      I’m just incredibly pleased to see community make the list.

      We do deserve to go extinct as a species looking at the top three of the top four though.

      I’m honestly baffled How I Met Your Mother is not on there. It might be just a regional thing, but it felt like HIMYM took over where Friends left off. It was massive in my mostly millenial friend group at the time, but seeing it not even mentioned makes me realize that it’s not everyone’s experience.

      Xennial here, and I can’t get through a day without hearing some fuckwit making a *Friends* reference. It’s completely woven into the fabric of our being, and it’s absolute fucking dogshit.

      How is Seinfeld not on that list?

      I liked Not Going Out, but am I missing something about this list that NGO is on there but not Seinfeld??

      I’ve traveled the world extensively for nearly 30 years and if there’s one show every culture knows about, it’s Friends. I think it’s more recognizable than Star Wars.
