In the summer of 1831, people across Europe and America reported seeing a blue (sometimes green or violet) Sun and experienced sudden cold weather and crop failures. For almost two centuries, the cause was unknown.

Recent research shows the culprit was a massive but undocumented eruption of the Zavaritski volcano on Simushir Island (North Pacific). Because the island was remote and sparsely inhabited, no records of the eruption existed at the time.

The eruption released huge amounts of aerosols, creating a haze that made the Sun look blue and temporarily cooled the climate—similar to the effects of Mount Tambora (1816) and Pinatubo (1991).
