News snippet: Politicians, media figures and free speech organisations expressed anger and alarm at the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show, warning that critics of Donald Trump were being systematically silenced.

ABC announced it was suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely after comments Kimmel made about Charlie Kirk’s killing led a group of ABC-affiliated stations to say it would not air the show.

On Wednesday evening, California governor Gavin Newsom called the firing of commentators and cancelling of shows “coordinated” and “dangerous.” He went on to say that the Republican party “does not believe in free speech. They are censoring you in real time.”

Democratic senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said “everybody across the political spectrum should be speaking out to stop what’s happening to Jimmy Kimmel.” His colleague Chris Murphy said it was likely the start of a campaign to “use the murder of Charlie Kirk as a pretext to use the power of the White House to wipe out Trump’s critics and his political opponents”, while Democratic politician Ro Khanna said “this is perhaps the first administration to make comedy illegal”.

Actor Ben Stiller said the decision to suspend Kimmels show “isn’t right”, while comedian and occasional Daily Show host Michael Kosta wrote: “This is a serious moment in American history. TV networks MUST push back. This is complete BS.”

This is why you vote Blue when the midterms arrive.

This will continue if you do not vote Blue.

Remember what we did for Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, flipping Georgia to Blue? We need to do that again, across the board. That is the only way you stop this.

Americans will be upset for a day and then move on. The administration is counting on our laziness

    4. Now with this precedent there is nothing holding back the next democratic administration from shutting Fox News down for good.

Step 1: Get the military equipment and personnel ready in place

Step 2: Mass arrests by masked, unidentifiable government people under the false pretense of capturing ‚illegals‘

      Step 3: Build camps

Step 4: Sledgehammer to censor media or any dissenting voices (plus own a favour to a big social media platform)

Step 5: Declare Antifa a terrorist group so that force and imprisonment are justifiable to anyone speaking out/demonstrating.

      Step 6: Here we go…

I am enjoying the first week of my total boycott of corporate media.

No CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN. Not to mention cable scum such as Fox News, Newsmax, OAN, etc.

Getting all my news from NPR and the Guardian.

      Fuck all Corporate Media.

Trust me, you’ll get a few years down the road and wish you hadn’t acquiesced to him. And that goes for both sides. The history books are full of it.

And if you’re a Republican, acquiesce means “to give in.” Let us know if you need help with “book.”

Invite him on, Colbert. So that he can fucking *rage.* No more Mr. Nice Guy.

So we can cancel Fox News now, right? Cause like their guy effectively telling people to murder homeless people is incredibly offensive.

Disney bent to the Cheeto in Chief. Disney owns ABC and Hulu. UNSUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already!

These comedians just need to post on their own channels and then get amplified 10x more than their normal syndications that most people don’t watch.

It’s time social media fights back.

The regime only wants its supporters to have free speech, if you say anything bad about them your a terrorist now. There is no voting them out, cant wait for the rigged elections.

    13. “Carr… [FCC chairman]….added significant pressure on ABC, especially as Nexstar Media Group, which owns numerous ABC-affiliated stations and is currently seeking FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, announced it would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its stations indefinitely, starting with the very next episode.”

There’s no rationalizing this one away conservatives.

The FCC chairman, out in the open, threatened to apply pressure on ABC/Disney to get Kimmel suspended during a podcast with far right caricature Benny Johnson earlier today.

This wasn’t another „purely financial decision“ or a sole decision by the company, or however you try to justify it—the government directly intervened.

Not to mention, Nexstar, a major ABC affiliate group, is currently seeking an approval for an acquisitions worth $6.2 billion, sound familiar?

And speaking of, this isn’t the first time, I don’t suspect it will be the last that the FCC applies regulatory pressures on media organizations that don’t toe the line.

      Brendan Carr himself:

      > Frankly I think it’s past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney, and say ‘We are going to preempt — we are not going to run Kimmel anymore until you straighten this out.’ It’s time for them to step up and say this garbage — to the extent that that’s what comes down the pipe in the future — isn’t something that serves the needs of our local communities.”

Boycott abc. Boycott Disney. Boycott Disney+. Boycott the parks. Boycott marvel. Boycott starwars. Boycott Hulu. Boycott espn. There was one company who did this, Disney.

    16. This will demand that the next Democratic President remove the broadcast license of Fox News and any Conservative televised talk show of their choosing. This is historical precedent and must be followed going forward.

    17. TheBigBuddyBusiness on

This is an obvious and brazen example of the FTC threatening ABC affiliates over a clear case of protected speech. It is one of the most clear-cut violations of the principle behind the First Amendment I’ve ever seen, but that sort of piecemeal disregard for the Constitution is pretty par for the course for Republicans and their voters.

Corporations will never learn that you can’t appease authoritarians. No matter how many times you capitulate, you’ll inevitably piss off the regime and they will turn against you like everyone else.

    18. pillionaire on

Just a reminder a FOX host recently called for the „involuntary lethal injection“ of untold numbers of mentally ill homeless people, and ain’t shit happened to him.

    19. AbleDanger12 on

Shareholder value above all else. They caved to keep their merger moving along.

    20. Shock and fears? No need to worry, because it’s fucking over, America. Runaway greed, selfishness, stupidity, and racism has destroyed the country.

    21. This is the precursor to trump controlling speech over the Epstein files. Watch.

    22. Underradar0069 on

People need to wake up. It is 1 st amendment at risk. Kirk went to hell and Trump is on the way

    23. Firewormworks on

Over at conservative reddit they are applauding this and those getting fired for poor taste Kirk jokes. Conservatives are saying that this is somehow different then getting fired for saying you support Hitler or similar. It’s amazing deluded and hypocritical the right is, free speech for me but not for thee.

    24. Its only the first amendment everyone. Its not even the important one. I’m sure all those DoNT tREaD oN Me stickers will save us.

    25. LongStriver on

      Yes, it is extremely concerning.

Extremely poor judgment from large US institutions to enable the Trump Admin to carry out the many atrocities it has commited.

    26. Wow, if Biden’s FCC threatened to remove Fox’s license for the misinformation they spread, the right would be singing a whole different tune.

    27. DarkSoulCarlos on

This was the government directly pressuring them to shut this guy down. This was an authoritarian move.

    28. From our AI overlords when asking for the definition of fascist:

A fascist is someone who supports or believes in fascism, which is a far-right, authoritarian political ideology. Fascism emphasizes:
      • Strong, centralized, dictatorial power – usually led by a single leader.
      • Suppression of opposition – censorship, intimidation, or violence against dissenting voices.
      • Extreme nationalism – often with a focus on a single ethnic, cultural, or racial identity.
      • Militarism – glorification of war, strength, and discipline.
      • Control over society and economy – though not necessarily full government ownership (as in communism), but heavy regulation to serve state interests.

    29. VinnieStacks on

With competent lawyers, Jimmy Kimmel should own ABC by the time this is all said and done

    30. As of tonight these cowards are not getting my money. Join my family.

I’m old enough to remember when we could just pirate material from the bastards. I’d never do this, but rumor has it you still can. Just sayin‘ that maybe the oligarchs will pay attention if we keep giving them money when we don’t have to.
