Irresponsible wording.
Decades of evidence show it has worse outcomes than restorative justice in every possible metric.
It is simply bad policy advocated for by those who don’t believe policy and reality should correspond based on evidence.
This wouldn’t be such an issue if we taught media literacy and general skepticism better.
A Practical Critical Thinking class that teaches those kinds of skills should be a mandatory in high school.
We don’t have to specifically tell kids that “tough on crime” or any other narrative is bad; but they should be taught to recognize the pattern of: an alarming and emotionally resonant story (as opposed to aggregate data) > a call for *urgent* action > a demand for certain “common sense” reforms.
What „tough on crime“ also does is turn people against the judiciary.
Something that fits quite nicely with those that wish to push the liberal out of democracy and march people into authoritarian modes of operating.
