Remember guys, this gun buyback is so vital to keeping Canadians safe it’s been delayed for years and nothing has happened.
Totally expecting Carney to kick this can down the road a while longer. Once the narrative about shifting the party too far right quiets down I expect this ridiculous waste of money to be lumped in with other cuts.
Hopefully the first step towards scrapping this ridiculous and performative program all together.. those guns at Target simply aren’t the problematic ones causing violence in our Urban streets. For that, we only need to look to home invasions and smugglers down south. Good riddance to bad policy, I hope.
Good. This whole program is an expensive and ineffective mess that has been criticized by anyone informed enough on gun regulations and safety.
It has always felt like a cynical ploy to pacify urban-riding voters that the government is taking a tough stance on guns while focusing on *people and weapons least likely to commit the crimes.*
People who don’t understand (or care about) the difference between fully or semi-automatic firearms appear to be the target audience for the Liberals here.
Further, the carve-out in the gun ban for Indigenous hunters really undermines the government’s point. If these guns aren’t functionally useful for hunting – why grant a carve-out to Indigenous hunters? Are these guns only useless to “colonizer” hunters?
Make it make sense. It’s extremely disappointing Carney didn’t can this when he had a chance to and I’m glad the OPP isn’t participating in this nonsense.
I don’t understand the opposition to this program. The guns are banned. People can’t use them, sell them or even transport them. The buy-back compensates them for these banned weapons. If police and the public don’t want the program, the alternative is that owners keep all those guns in storage, not that they will suddenly become legal again. Do people have an issue with the guns being banned, or is the problem that gun owners are going to be compensated?
