      >Tan acknowledges he was stressed at the time of his psychotic break. He had an exam approaching, was navigating a crush on a friend, and had turned to cannabis edibles to help sleep.

      >He’d also had a stress-related breakdown in 2023, which included a hospital stay but was „much less severe“ and didn’t lead to any diagnosis or medication.

I feel like this context is particularly important. History of mental illness, which included a stay in the Psych ward, plus heavy use of cannabis and extreme stress in life seems like the bigger picture here.

    2. Instead of racing to believe the promise of AI driven efficiency the federal government should be sitting down in committee and studying what kind of policies and laws need to be put in place *now* and what needs to be put in place for 10 years in the future.

You might not be able (or want) to stop AI from becoming ingrained in every aspect of life but we probably want to avoid it being a total wildwest. It’s always better to be proactive with laws than reactive.

    3. This is one of the kinds of thing the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence should be concerning themselves with, not promoting AI willy-nilly.

The Daily (the NY Times podcast) had an episode on this topic yesterday that was really interesting and sad. Recommend you don’t read the Reddit thread on it though where of course everyone pushes their fedoras back long enough to tell us they are too intelligent and educated to fall down this rabbit hole. The comments from GPT were pretty tone deaf and the journalist who covers it there sounded genuinely beat down from hearing from so many of these people.

She said at the end people (including minors) are using a glorified calculator as a best friend and therapist which struck me as apt.
