Maybe this was something to work out with the party BEFORE you said you were stepping aside ye wee daft woman!
Sigh. LIke it matters anyway, the party imploded last time she left and it will this time. There’s no real actual underlying common belief that holds the party together, they’re just a bunch of people who like chardonney and donuts and are mad at things.
Perhaps a new leader can find some unifying threads to help actually create a framework for a more real party.
Right now is a very interesting time in Canadian politics.
The Green Party of Canada is kind of figuring out it’s identity going forward.
At the provincial level I have really been liking the focus of the Ontario Greens and in particular Mike Schreiner on affordable/accessible housing.
The BC Greens have a very interesting leadership contest going underway since Sonia Furstenau stepped down. I was a big fan of Furstenau with her focus on mental health, First Nations & Indigenous Peoples focus, 4-day work weeks, and electoral reform – proportional representation focus alongside environmentalism.
The Federal NDP is currently figuring out it’s identity going forward. I am hoping for more Economic Democracy and Environmentalism myself. I had hoped some of the most militant Labour Movement voices would run but I am still excited with some of the potential candidates.
We may see a race in Alberta and we can see how Naheed Nenshi with the Alberta NDP chooses to go forward in marketing and communications.
The OLP may soon have a new leader and as I stated in the other post just previous to this I’d love to see Karina Gould or Nathaniel Erskine-Smith but Nate may be a bit too much for some of the establishment factors in the party lol.
Soon we will see what PP and the Conservative Party of Canada do for going forward.
It’s going to be an interesting time in the next few years before the next federal election and then the provincial ones we will see before or after that.
I just hope we figure out how to fix the affordability of life crisis/quality of life crisis going on. The amount of pain and suffering going on right now in the working class and the most vulnerable is horrendous and it is primarily existing around foundational realities like housing and groceries.
Not that I think the Green party will ever be anything but a fringe party, but May seems to want to totally bury it.
Green Party internal factions make other federal parties look like tea parties in comparison. They’ve sabotaged Paul and Pedenault and now they’re going after May. Given the breakfast cereal that ran for party leadership the last time they held a race, they’d probably be better off keeping May.
FYI: the headline is a little misleading. When she announced her intention to not lead the party into the next election, she also asked members to vote in favor of her leadership review coming up. This is mentioned in the article, but the headline makes it sound like she changed her mind on stepping down.
There will likely never be another Green leader with the media attention and name recognition amongst the general populace as May. That’s why she keeps coming back and they struggle without her.
Losing Jenica Atwin to floor crossing to the liberals was honestly the death blow for this party losing one of your 3 MPs as a minor party was absolutely embarrassing
