This is a great example of how our society turns poverty into a cycle that can be incredibly difficult to break out of. So naturally this isnt gonna pass, but I do appreciate that someone in the senate is still trying in earnest.

Can’t wait to see why republicans say this is bad for the working class and vote against it.

I have a 25 yr career where I have been required to have my credit report pulled. There have been times when it was rough – a single Mom in a HCOL – and I don’t get the job because I didn’t have a high enough credit score. It didn’t matter that my credit blemish was when I found out my exhusband let my student loans go into default and I paid everything on time in the years since. Absolute bullshit.

Also, know your rights. They cannot pull your credit until AFTER they give you an offer. I’m talking about you – Northwest FCU. They do a credit pull just to schedule an interview. That’s wrong. Also – you can appeal decisions when there is something like my situation – proving for 24 months I had solid payments allowed me to get hired (elsewhere).

Unless someone has a criminal record in financial crimes – people should be innocent until proven guilty.
Its the insurance and bonding that is making these requests.

    4. That’s awesome. Thanks for trying to blow out that match. It’ll go nowhere. But the f’n dumpster fire raging all around you? I mean…glad to see something about this. Can we „Yes, and….?“ the other shit?

Should be eliminated for a lot of careers but not all. Police, firefighters, gov officials and those in finance with access to company funds.

Good! You cannot draw a conclusion about a person from their credit score; you can only make assumptions. This is a nightmare for victims of financial abuse & for folks coming out of poverty. Even if there is an ability to appeal, a person should not have to reveal private information about themselves in order to “justify” their credit score.

Can we just ban credit scores? They didn’t even exist until like 1990

    8. Republicans and Trump will never let this pass. They hold the majority because of last years elections. And Republicans are not in government to help the working class.

Republicans use racism and prejudice to get dumb people to vote for Republicans, then the Republicans help the rich get richer by screwing the rest of us.

    9. Counterpoint. We run them because we work in finance and need to know if someone has terrible credit because there is a higher chance of them doing something dumb and desperate with other people’s money.

Someone needs to finish the class action lawsuit against NPD. 3 billion records leaked, including ssn. Employers shouldn’t be passing out your data to places that retain it

    11. FeeDisastrous3879 on

Is this so employers can’t identify you as a possible exploitable wage slave?

Is it to prevent employers from identifying you as indelible for higher up positions because you are seemingly fiscally irresponsible?

Or is there something more sinister?

    12. No_Middle2320 on

Freeze all your credit reports AND your work number report (Equifax). They won’t be able to verify shit unless you say so.

Can we run credit reports for the job of President of the country?

Maybe something like, I dunno, having a bankruptcy would disqualify you from running?

There are good reasons to have security and financial background checks *for certain industries* particularly where corporate information could be extremely valuable in the wrong hands.

Financial vulnerability or exploitable financial distress may encourage people to sell, embezzle, or profit from access. The Fraud Triangle“ model includes pressure, opportunity, and rationalization. This person is driven by financial distress, has access to company resources, and can justify their unethical actions

That’s not to say a bad credit score would be indicative of that possibility because selling state secrets isn’t going to help your credit score. But if you have A holistic portfolio of bad debts, bad credit score, and a history of financial problems. You may not be inappropriate employee for certain positions.

Again, this makes sense for specific career fields and there should be exceptions for those career fields in this bill.

And yes, the responses will be will most white-collar crime… It’s not all white collar crime. Sometimes it is blue collar people pilfering low level embezzlement or fraud.

Let’s take it a step further and ban random companies that I don’t authorize to create credit reports or background checks on me . I never authorized Equifax, TransUnion and whatever else to have my data

      Good. on Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The so-called „Fair Credit Reporting Act“ encourages bank et al. irresponsibility in so many ways more than anything its purpose describes. Its legalese reads more like advocating for involuntary servitude with all that personal data being used in commerce. Not to mention the erroneously defined „consumer“ definition. FFS consumer is an economic activity that even banks engage in, not an „individual“.

Not to mention: One too many data breaches.

    17. Ok_Series_4580 on

Well, this ain’t gonna happen: number one-It came from Elizabeth Warren and number two-It’s good for workers.

Damn something that actually might improve people’s lives. I didn’t have that on my bingo card this year

    19. Accomplished_Pin8881 on

Hopefully this is exempt to government workers. I don’t want cops and lawyers with bad debt or bad credit.

When I was growing up my dad was very irresponsible with money, even open credit cards in my name before I was 18. I had shitty credit most of my life. When I was in college I just did work study and made 11K a year. I got my first big break as a referral from a good friend who worked at a fun credit union and I interviewed for a good salaried position. They loved my interview and my personality, next came the credit check. I failed that, they thought I was terrible with money. Nope, it was just shitty parents. Now, I won’t ever work for any financial institution and go through that shitty feeling again.

    21. SeaTownKraken on

If I could afford a CPA or some wealth management person, I’d want the company to maybe check their credit though? Maybe a little?

    22. WearyAnxiety123 on

My credit is shot specifically because I can’t find a job or get all call back for even the most entry level role.
