Zunächst wurde ich in einer Protestantische Familie wie Heather geboren und aufgewachsen. Sie ist in der örtlichen Gemeinde bekannt und besuchte ein paar Zeremonien in meiner Sekundarschule als Teenager. Meine Familie kennt sie durch Gemeinschaftsveranstaltungen, die in der Kirche organisiert wurden, und ich habe vor ein paar Jahren kurz mit ihr gesprochen.
Im Allgemeinen ist sie in der Gegend von Cavan/Monaghan beliebt, weil sie sich dafür einsetzte, viel Geld in die Gegend zu investieren, z. Trotz ihrer erfolgreichen Politik der Gemeindepumpe würde ich nie in Betracht ziehen, für sie zu stimmen, weil sie offen mit der orangefarbenen Ordnung eine schockierende Verbindung mit der orangefarbenen Orden hat.
Die jüngsten Neuigkeiten über die Mitgliederzahl ihres Mannes in der orangefarbenen Ordnung sind für niemanden in ihrer örtlichen Gemeinde überrascht. If any evidence can be produced of her attending parades and Waving Union Jacks as recently as 2017 then she is done for.
I don’t like to jump to conclusions, but is there any chance she had a word in Fine Gael suggesting that RIC commemoration back in 2020? If that comes up again along with this stuff it’ll sink her.
I would love to see a photo of her with a Union Jack flag.
She wouldn’t be on my list anyway but yours is an interesting perspective.
I’m generally a big supporter of cross-cultural dialogue and tolerance but I thought her approach while as Minister for the Gaeltacht was the opposite of that. Tolerance and dialogue has to cut both ways and if you are tolerant of extremists or fundamentally intolerant people then, in these days and times, I’m afraid you’re just a mug or a useful idiot.
Tolerating the intolerant makes life harder in every case for the people who would try to extend an olive branch or a hand from within communities that might otherwise resist that.

Animal cruelty, while not considered a serious crime by the Irish state, in my opinion is a particularly vile and sadistic offence. The fact that she wrote a letter of support for someone accused of it makes her wholly unfit for the presidency.
As someone who is also from Co. Monaghan and who likes their animals happy, content and well-cared for, she will not see a vote from anyone in my household. I don’t know anyone around me who has a good thing to say about her. In fact, I’ve heard her openly mocked more often than not. In saying that, I live in a culturally-Catholic town.
I have no idea why anyone down south would want her anywhere near govt. Loyalism/Orangeism is literally rooted in hating Irish culture, nationalism and Catholicism. She’s the last person I would want in the presidential office.

The case around her allegedly stopping a prosecution would put me off her alone. When you add to this her inability to speak Irish as former minister with responsibility for that then that shows a degree of ineptitude. On the subject of orange marches, I would force them to sign clauses which accept LGBT beliefs and to support a multi ethnic society. Make it a condition of them marching. After that wave your union jacks, do your little marches and dont bother anyone. In a pluralist state I don’t have an issue with them expressing their culture once they meet certain caveats.

Ulster unionism is going to have to be accepted in a united Ireland.
On a personal level, I’ve met Heather and I found her to be a genuinely nice woman, very helpful, and she gets a long with people from all backgrounds, which is something I would look for in a president.
Remember Michael D said, he is the President of everyone.
It beggars belief that FG put her forward as a candidate.
If she were to win then loyalists and unionists in the North would have a field day and try and claim that Ireland wants to be part of the Union again.
Thanks for this. Have never voted for FG in my life in part due to the likes of Gay Mitchell, John Bruton, Charlie Flanagan etc., whose views on Irish history contrast hugely with mine. Of course, there are many other party ideology and policy reasons too.That certainly won’t change now!

Not surprising, in recent years FG oversaw the appointment of men with close links to the British establishment over key institutions of our Republic. Harris, a member of MI5 (subject to the associated oaths) as Garda Commissioner, Makhlouf, a former British policy maker and former Private Secretary to a British Chancellor as head of the Central Bank, Godfrey, a former British government civil servant and Cambridge alum as head of the media regulator Comisiún na Meán and Bakhurst another Cambridge alum and 20 year BBC veteran as head of RTE.
Genuine question: Does the average Protestant person from Drum identify as Irish Unionist?

The first President of Ireland was Protestant: Douglas Hyde, who had done great work to preserve the Irish language. One of the reasons for his selection was his religion; it was felt that a Protestant President would signal to the world that the Irish State was not an exclusively Catholic one.
The fourth President was also Protestant: Erskine Hamilton Childers, whose Republican father was executed during the Civil War for possession of a gun, which, ironically had been given to him by Michael Collins before the Troubles. Childers asked the teenage Erskine to shake the hands of all who had signed his death warrant, which he did.
These men were very far from the attitudes and belligerence of the Orange Order, as I know most Protestants in the Republic are.
Heather Humphreys is certainly not fit to take up this proud Irish Protestant legacy.
