Best option for the party at this point given the split result. Glad to see it happen fairly quickly and smoothly.
Not enthused about *another* leadership race (the party should put its focus elsewhere), but it will bring a lot of attention and money to the party, at least.
And with that, I will once again promote r/OntarioLiberalParty 🙂
The writing was dripping off the wall when the results came out earlier, just surprised it took less than a day.
Figured we wouldn’t get a resignation until after at least a week of Bonnie „contemplating her future“, guess not.
If the ONDP sticks with Stiles, and the OLP picks Nate Erskine Smith as their next leader; the OLP will form government in a few years.
I’m pleasantly surprised Crombie resigned this fast. I wish her well.
The focus of the OLP leadership race needs to prioritize party unity, with defeating Doug Ford 2nd. The new leader will face the same problems Crombie faced, including if it’s Nate Erskine-Smith, but this time from the Pro-Crombie camp who will prefer another Crombie type.
The new leader needs to spend at minimum a year to unite the party. To build a real Big Tent with a seat at the table for different views. My preference is NES but I know he rubs more partisan Liberals the wrong way because they don’t think he’s a team player, he’s outspoken, and leans too left for their liking. So let’s see who decides to run.
But my case for NES as OLP leader will be that he will easily absorb support from progressives because he actually is a progressive. It will make the NDP an irrelevant choice in an election, especially if they stick with Stiles.
I hope Nate becomes the new OLP leader.
Clearly with the current federal government, he didn’t move up to become a minister which i honestly think he deserves. He’s better off taking his talents to the provincial government and becoming its leader to have impact.
Not surprising, 57% really isn’t a tenable level of support. I wonder how long NES waits before announcing his leadership run, he’s basically been campaigning for a month already
I hope the party will actually back Nate but he’s burned so many bridges (and has built a reputation as being hard to work with) that I can see the brass rallying around someone else.
I hope the next OLP leader leans progressive and is open to some sort of electoral collaboration with the ONDP (or even formal merger but the ONDP would have to be on board). It’s been multiple elections where Doug Ford has profited off of a split opposition to lead the province to decline
I think it took her too long for her to do so after her defeat. But I am not surprised, I expected her to go down close to a leadership vote at the most, which is what happened. She did not shine as a politician, like most Ontario politicians, and she is forgettable.
In my opinion, the Liberals would have gone nowhere next election if she had stayed as a leader.
