The pace is literally part of the goals. So either the end goal hasn’t changed or you’re no longer committed to trying to reach it. You can’t do both. Our climate goals are based on reaching certain targets by certain dates. Climate change isn’t something that remains stagnant and waits for you. Reductions today are significantly more impactful than the same level reductions tomorrow.

I hate this argument that the climate should take a back seat to the short-term economy. We aren’t improving the economy: we are just robbing from our future economy to prop this one up. This is classic neoliberalism. Imagine if our predecessors thought this way? “Why should I plant a tree today if I’ll never sit in its shade?”

What are we going to do when the economy is collapsing due to climate change? What will we do when the O&G industry collapses? We can’t just build another pipeline to get out of it. This is a massive opportunity to reinvent our economy and better insulate it for the future. Instead, Carney is doubling down on the failed politics that has created this whole mess.
