Fundamentally we can’t just keep depending on the private sector to bail us out. Market based solutions can only take us so far when ‚the market‘ is acting increasingly erratically, irrationally and short-termist.
The NHS is one of the biggest employers in the world. The British University sector is one of the most advanced and well respected in the world. Why can’t we research and manufacture our own drugs rather than depending on all these private companies?
Just introduce a law like india, if a drug company charges too much money for a drug then a local uk based one can ignore all IP and make it for cost + X amount.
It promotes local drug companies to set-up and make generic drugs and stops price gauging.
It’s been going since 2013 and has been a great success and should be fully copied here:
