I played video games to save my mental health. It was a scary, stressful, isolated time and video games helped me tune out from all of that for a while each day.

    2. I swear the only reason I made it through sane was animal crossing.  Not being able to go out was rough.

Too much of anything is not good for mental health including video games. But it’s actually not that it’s too much, it’s that there’s only so much a person can do in a day and when that involves neglecting other needs that’s when the mental health starts declining. By only having very narrowly defined interests and failing to eat, sleep, socialize, and experience a variety of activities during the day we’re atrophying areas of the brain. We’re destroying neural connections and cementing others effectively creating habits. It’s bad habits that leave us neglected that can cause mental illness. Now do a study on doomscrolling and social media time usage.

    4. Yea I’d say that’s plainly obvious.

It’s not 2014 gamergate era-esque „video games cause violence“ rhetoric.. than why do we use research resources to prove it?

I mean go off – it’s clearly funded.

    5. There’s a reason *Among Us*; a social deduction game with an ankle-high barrier for entry became so popular during the pandemic.

I’m surprised the base assumption here is that videogames would a stressor for mental health problems during the pandemic. Coop games are a fantastic source of social connection for people who are physically distant.

Methinks the person who wrote this headline isn’t very familiar with the breadth of game genres.

One of the ways videogames can contribute to mental health issues is by serving as a replacement for personal growth in real life. During the pandemic however, there was little personal growth to be done IRL, so I would imagine the impacts would have been reduced.

    6. Video games with friends was a fantastic way to socialize when you couldn’t see people in person

    7. This misses the huge population of children who came to platforms like Roblox in the millions.

    8. I remember when my nan had died, I had recently started playing Persona 3 FES. It was my first time experiencing a Persona game so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I did retreat into myself a bit because I was close with my nan. Turns out playing a game revolving around death and finding meaning in it was actually good therapy for me, and I probably coped a lot better because of playing such a game.

I am sure many people have similar stories about games being a helpful thing in difficult situations
