In Mayo we have a festival for these magnificent creatures. Féile na Roc Chuan Mó or The Clew Bay Skate Festival. A fleet of fisherman/anglers fish for a skate, catch them, tag them (conservation purposes), and release them. The boat with the largest skate gets a prize. Then there’s drinking and music after. Great craic.
They are lovely animals, really fast swimmers too.
Fishing really doesn’t seem very sustainable at all – the last form of wild hunting really, only done on an industrial hoovering up the ecosystem kind of way.
