It’s messed up that he apparently only accepts gay people because he found out his son is gay. But, I’m willing to extend him some grace and give him the opportunity to prove that he’s sincere and is treating everyone with the dignity and respect they deserve.

I am glad that he chose his son over his party. I don’t believe anyone who was running as a republican in the last 20 years should hold office even if they’ve suddenly decided they aren’t republican anymore. If you want to be a Democrat now fine. I was lucky enough to have my own dad put away his ego and harmful beliefs when I came out and we can have a relationship. In this case it’s his son that matters and if this makes the son happy, I’m all for it.

First time? I’m transgender, my parents were wildly anti trans and ignorant before I came out. Now they’re super pro trans rights. Yeah, you can say people only care when it affects them. But plenty of my queer friends had family who still hated queer people when it ‘affected them’.
