‘Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil have become embroiled in a war of words over comments about Gaza made by presidential candidate Jim Gavin.
In an interview recently, the Fianna Fáil candidate said: „It’s unconscionable that the bombing is still taking place when I believe that the military objectives have probably been reached for that military campaign.“’

Other than being a GAA manager, what is it that makes this chap capable of the presidency? I’m from Dublin, but have zero interest in GAA, so not sure how this fella got the ticket. Aside from that however, if he’s tone deaf regarding Palestine, then maybe he’s best left on the bench.

I’m not into GAA so never heard of the man but he seems like a sly fucker.
I don’t understand what was wrong about what he said. I’d have thought Sinn Fein would agree that what they’re doing is unconscionable?
The comments have caused controversy because it sticks to the white washing of the objectives. This was never a military campaign the IDF were engaging in. It was a war of ethnic cleansing and genocide. If Jim wants to be president then he will need a sharper tongue and an engaged mind. The only people who will realistically vote for him might be a few single crusty old middle class sorts or some nostalgic Dubs fans. I must be one of the very few Dubs who despises the Grab All Association and their members.
After Mary Robinson, Mary McAleese and Michael D, I expect our President to be thoughtful, knowledgeable and well able to form their own opinions. So far, it seems he is just parroting FF party lines
What’s he talking about the objects are not met and Hamas are still in control
It’s something a military officer might say behind closed doors, but any seasoned politician would never. Gonna be a long few weeks for Jim.
The focus of this campaign should be how the candidate will represent the country, geopolitical issues are not the remit of the President and if this campaign is going to be some sort of referendum on Gaza it will be a nonsense.
I want to see how the candidates envisage their 7 year term, and not the current „hot topic“

Jim brought a lot of joy and pride to our county and to my home. But I won’t even consider voting for a FF candidate. This comment he’s made is completely out of touch with the empathy and consideration of the majority of our people. Fuck Israel
Ah, Sinn Fein the party whose TD’s celebrated the murder of a Garda coming out to parse a statement for not being doctrinal enough. Israel has a right to respond to the Hamas attack, something some folk think was ok. The vast majority think Isreal was entitled to respond to the largest mass murder of Jewish people since WW2. The vast majority think long ago that was achieved and the subsequent campaign was murder of civilians. That’s literally what Gavin said. Again, I can’t believe I’m defending FF but the weaponising of the Palestine people by some on the Irish political scene who seem to be fighting for the most extreme take on it is wild.

FF are disgusting. MM commenting on the shooter in Jerusalem but staying quiet about tens of thousands of children being murdered in Gaza.

These views are very out of step with the general public. This is a serious slip of the the mask and while I suspect that senior figures in FF and FG agree with Jim, anyone whose been paying attention to Netanyahu knows that this was always about the full destruction of Palestine.

Im really not seeing the issue here. He basically said that what’s happening there is unconscionable and that he believes all the military objectives (ie response to Oct7th) have probably been achieved. This is just him saying that he doesnt believe Israel has any excuse for what theyre doing any more.
Not a FF fan but Im really not seeing where the outrage over this comment is coming from? The use of the word ‚probably‘? Well unless you’re inside the higher echelons of the IDF or the Israeli government you cant say for certain if their military objectives have been achieved.
Fuck off Jim back to what you’re decent at, and stick your head in the sand for a little bit while you’re at it.
I have a feeling Jim Gavin will struggle dealing with the media – he’s a strong candidate on paper, but comments like that is where he’s going to fall down.
That’s a big misstep comment for sure
Gavin’s whole shtick as Dublin manager was to be as intentionally opaque, dull, and uninteresting as possible. He’s a great football manager, but he’s not an authentic person – particularly when compared to someone like Higgins who can be relied upon to give his opinions honestly and in a fortnight manner regardless of the consequences.
He’s also ex-military, so the whole „military objectives“ spiel is hardly surprising either, especially given his tendency towards equivocation as opposed to plainly stating his views for fear of generating controversy.
This is FF (and FGs) own fault for making this issue so central to the government. Now they’re part of the leftwing circlejerk where they’re all competing to criticise each other by being continuously outraged.
His campaign is over before it began. This is telling for FF that he is their best candidate.
