Anyone who has watched it is clear it’s a scam even if the advert looks like him doing it. You really should have some kind of carer watching you if you genuinely believe you can make money from it
„With a €200 euro investment you get back €40000 a month“
aye pal that’s why you’re advertising it in a 20 second YouTube advert
What am I to believe anymore, was breakfast role man real?
It’s not even his voice in the YouTube ad. It’s been dubbed over with a British accent
Whatever about not holding social media companies directly liable for what is posted on their websites, I find it hard to see the justification in not holding them directly liable for what they put in front of users as paid advertising.
If as Instagram or Twitter you take money to promote a scam, and then put it in front of vulnerable people (who you are targeting) then the law should absolutely hold you liable for that.
Until it does they will not take measures to prevent this, because it is profitable for them.
I saw those ads and reported them for impersonation. There were similar ads featuring Micheal Martin doing the same. Instagram came back and said they investigated and that they weren’t doing anything wrong.
I knew it wasn’t really him when he wasn’t predicting a recession
The worst thing about it all is when you report them, and youre told they don’t violate any regulations.
I’m still getting fake Anne Doyle and Varadkar.
There’s a few of them floating around, there’s a recent one of President Higgins throwing money into the air, it looks really tasteless and it’s obviously a scam. I report it to Facebook and absolutely nothing happens.
Just to flag here: I reported this exact sponsored post to Facebook, and I got a message back saying the ad didn’t break any rules. Insanity.
Youtube is just all scam.adverts these daya. Like shit from 20 years ago. Bizarre that its not stopped
The ads of David McWilliams on FB fooled my mom.
Instagram is especially bad about this. For example, even if you report the ad, you then have to go into Settings -> Support requests -> Reports to even see if they were removed. I’m honestly not sure though.
Many will say „This ad was removed“. But when I click „see report details“ it says „We didn’t remove xyz’s ad“.
Meta doesn’t seem to care at all. From a technical perspective, it would be barely an inconvenience for them to have a system to check if an ad either days „David McWilliams“ or uses images or videos that resemble him. They just don’t care.
I get Hobbes too, and Micheal Martin.
The level of technological unsophistication required to fall for something like this is so great that the people who fell for it were going to fall for something that day, this isn’t an AI deep fake problem it’s a general education problem.
Aside from putting limits on certain people’s accounts I don’t know how you stop it.
This stuff is very convincing to a different generation.
I practically had to wrestle my mother’s iPad from her hands before she sent “David McWilliams” €500 worth of Bitcoin.
I actually reported several of them and all reports were sent back with no action or they didn’t violate any of the rules.
So it’s the social media companies fault
He’s on every fucking programme for weeks.. just when everyone had realised he’s irrelevant
There is a mining magnate in Australia who is putting a lot of money into a court case against Meta for scam ads using his image.
He is pretty determined and if he were to win it might shake things up.
Meta etc all hide behind an old Clinton eta law from the 90s. It made platforms exempt from nearly all liability for user generated content.
This was back in the early days of mass adoption of the internet before huge platforms.
If I write a letter to a newspaper that is defamatory and they publish it then the newspaper has liability.
Same scenario with an internet platform and the platform has no liability,
But many have said that classifying ads as UGC is a stretch.
And now that all content is algorithmically displayed…is that UGC? It’s not like the old timeline?
We are in a dark time. Maybe in 50 years the law will catch up with the platforms.
Look if meta didn’t take ads from crypto scams and other con jobs they wouldn’t be the one of the biggest companies in the world today.
People love to talk about free market but then try to regulate tech giants from making money
They are easily duped.
