      ***The Telegraph reports:***

Nato fighter jets shot down Russian drones over Poland in the [first ever direct engagement](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/09/10/ukraine-russia-war-latest-news-drones-poland-nato/) between the Western alliance and Moscow.

Polish, Dutch and Italian fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a wave of Russian drones, in what the European Union said was a “reckless and unprecedented” violation.

Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, said the drone wave had brought the West and Russia “closer [to conflict] than at any time since the Second World War” as he called an emergency meeting of Nato allies.

No one was killed or injured during the incident, in which about 19 drones, including Gerbera decoy UAVs, crossed into Polish airspace during a raid on neighbouring Ukraine.

Nato forces shot down at least four of the drones, whereas others ran out of fuel or crashed, with impacts and debris reported in at least five villages in eastern and central Poland.

A Nato source said of the incident: “It was the first time Nato aircraft have engaged potential threats [in] allied airspace.”
