New Democrats need to understand that nearly everyone loses from the TFW program and that true open-borders ideology is unsustainable in a country like Canada (perhaps anywhere but certainly unsustainable in an economy of our size). There is nothing inherently racist or stigmatizing about criticizing a *program* and there is nothing inherently left-wing about open borders. *Liberal*, yes, but now is a great time for leftists and social democrats to distinguish themselves from mainstream liberalism.
Notice how none of the critics respond to the second and third part of his statement? Only the first (TFWs straining food banks and homeless shelters) got any actual rebuttal and it’s the most dubious argument he made there. Second and third are basically facts at this point and I’d be hard pressed to find anyone to refute them.
Once again we see the progressive wing of the NDP aligning itself with business interests. The western NDP has always understood that doing the opposite of that is the path to government, but I guess progressives wouldn’t be progressives if they didn’t have their love of losing.
Case and point why the federal NDP are on a life support and why the BC NDP could very well lose the next election.
People on this sub routinely wonder how the NDP alienates normal voters by pandering to identity politics, well here’s a great example. The TFW system hurts workers, their traditional base, and they’re quick to throw them under the bus to rush in to defend immigration with zero nuance.
Is Katrina Chen an idiot? She compares her story to one of a TFW. At no point did Eby say immigrants are bad and definitely not those who become MLA’s cabinet members, but that immigration needs reform. It’s embarrassing how many self inflicted wounds the NDP have and it seems the base’s priority is to oppose whatever the conservatives say, no matter what.
David Eby constantly proves that he has the best political instincts on anyone on the Canadian left. From crime, decriminalization, to TFWs, Eby is extremely adept at reading the pollical moment and avoiding the echo chamber effect progressive figures in this country often get themselves in trouble with. Even as someone broadly critical of the NDP, I have immense respect for him, and he is probably the only current NDP figure that could get me to vote for the party in a federal election
What exactly is controversial about saying TFWs shouldn’t be using food banks? It should not be controversial that we shouldn’t be wanting to be bringing in people who are unable to be self-sustaining.

Does she want the government to fund TFWs’ meals?
