Canadians seem to be counter offering with partisan nonsense, whataboutisms and just general extremism on the topic.
Refreshing. I was honestly expecting „China bad, US good, we live in a comic book“ because that’s the typical line from our American owned media and politicians. Anyway, back to reality where we will of course continue to follow our master’s imperial policy like a chihuahua, to our shared demise.
this protectionism makes sense if we want to protect our domestic car industry. However, our domestic industry doesn’t make the cars we need. Those who want an EV are basically SOL because our domestic industry doesn’t make them. So what are we protecting?
This is like the transition from horse carriage to cars, if we tariffed cars to protect our horse and buggy industry. Those who want a car can’t get one because we must protect our old industry.
Our industry isn’t moving forward, so we need to accept vehicles from industry that has moved forward. Or we commit to having a real EV industry! But we just let our automakers off the hook again, so we won’t have an EV industry…..
Drop the tariffs or commit to having a real EV industry.
The only real argument for these tariffs is the USA.
That’s the reason the tariffs exist in the first place.
And the Americans will undoubtedly continue to pressure us to keep China simply because they consider us their own economic zone to control as they please.

Welp, if the banks are going to start acknowledging that we’re already firmly in the Chinese century it’ll only be a matter of time until we rid ourselves of our American manufacturers here. Given what’s happened to Hyundai in Georgia i’m not sure we have much left to learn or share with our neighbours to the south.
They are BRANCH PLANTS, there are no Canadian Car companies. Now….if China builds some assembly plants in Canada to create a few Canadian jobs….I have no problem with this. Sell them the shuttered American owned car plants. For sure, no country wants their country flooded with cutthroat cheap Chinese products that destroy all competition.
