Hallo wieder!

    1. Yeah, its not his comment on his own shortcomings that he should apologise for, it was his intent to treat you differently from the rest and to openly state to the rest that he has a problem dealing with irish catholics, and imply that its OK!

Well done for sending the shot across the bow. You can only report this shit, its up to him to learn from it.

If you feel his email does not accurately reflect how you felt, it is important to flag that now so that there is a record in case there are future issues.

You could sign it off by saying you’re happy to move past it regardless and look forward to the course, etc.

Yea , hopefully they learned, maybe it was a dumb joke that came off shit, but still, from your other post, they came off as ignorant as shit

It really depends on whether his immediate comment was to establish to you that despite him being from Northern Ireland he doesn’t frequently pronounce Irish names hence why he initially said it wrong.

It all depends on if he frequently mispronounces it going ahead until then his reasoning is and was reasonable.

It is also reasonable on your side to pre emptively assume an issue based on information from direct friends and family as well as Reddit and to try get ahead of it.

I’d personally reply that you appreciate his background and his lack of familiarity with the pronunciation of your name and if he can pronounce every other students name reasonably well there should be no issues with making effort for yours. But that might be after he’s not yet made an attempt.

I’m from the north and went to college in Belfast, my girlfriend has a particularly niche name As Gaelige and the amount of micro aggressions and outright bigotry she received from Unionist/Loyalist taxi drivers was mental.

Fair play to you for putting this cunt in his place.

Is your name hard to pronounce? This seems like a total fuck you if your name is able to be pronounced in basic English. There is multiple polish students around me daily, and if someone was to send an email like that saying “sorry I’m not polish so I can’t prnounce your name” and then went on to say “I hear you have a problem, I was simply giving context” there would be uproar about that. It’s disciplinary level.

    7. That’s not much of an apology, I wouldn’t accept that! I’m assuming the zoom was recorded, I wouldn’t let this go, he certainly won’t!

    8. Fair play for saying something. Fairly bullshit response but hell be less likely to step out of line for now at least.

Honestly, I think it was a bit excessive reporting him in the first place. Making a mountain out of a molehill for something that really did just seem like a genuine mistake.

If it was continued harassment, well then of course bring it up. But I think it was frankly ridiculous reporting this.

A lot of people in other thread seemed to pile on the lecturer because he was a loyalist. If the lecturer in question was French/Spanish, I doubt it would’ve seen the same outrage. And now people in this thread complaining that his apology wasn’t good enough. Do they expect him to be giving a live TV statement apologising along with compensation for OP?

And I’m not sure why the mods are allowing this to be posted here. This is not related to Ireland at all. It’s someone going to college in a foreign country who has a UK lecturer.

      Just my 2 cents though.

    10. It reads to me like “I’m sorry if you misunderstood me and took offence” bullshit, rather than an actual “I’m sorry for saying something offensive” apology. He’s basically putting the blame on you, rather than owning his mistake. I’d be taking it further with the dean if I was in your shoes.

Hope it all works out for you….but just a little advice for the future, not all grievances need to be shared publicly…nobody commenting here or cheering you on has any skin in this game, but you’ve just shared a private email and have may expose yourself to a wider pushback/soiled reputation with this person or their peers.

    12. Setting yourself up for a fall though. Given the lecturer seems to have carte blanche in terms of marks.

Come on… what was your surname or first name that you used? If it’s ‘padraig o’meara’, then fair enough – but if you registered as “Fiách Toirdhealbhach-O’Brianachta Og”, then they might think your taken the piss.

    14. Weird! Academia isn’t usually where you go to be insulted 🤷‍♂️ I have no context to what was said

At the time I posted that it was nothing and I was quickly down voted

      Seems like I was right

What seemed peculiar from the other thread to me is how you say the lecturer seemed to try to avoid you altogether, even going back over the other students again etc. This doesn’t seem like the most sincere apology here on top of that, but it is what it is.

Might be worth staying vigilant now, if it was indeed a once off, you should be grand? However if things keep happening it’d be wise to get a pattern of behaviours. I think people can be really subtle about these prejudices if they want to though.

    17. Good thing to make it known.

He knows he is on a short lease and has a complaint against him. Hopefully, it will cut any further nonsense before it happens.

Imagine being a lecturer making an offhand joke that didn’t land and having to deal with this kinda stuff lol. Give yer head a wobble.

Presumably he is familiar with the pronounciation of all other cultures‘ names if he had to give yours a special callout? Christ you would think he would try to figure out Irish names if he only has one left to go
