I’ve linked to the news release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article:

**Attraction goes beyond looks: Study shows voices, scents, and motion all matter**
New research published in the British Journal of Psychology provides evidence that **physical attraction is not simply about being objectively good-looking. Instead, attraction seems to arise from a complex mix of shared traits, personal preferences, and subtle non-verbal signals that go far beyond facial features**. The study examined how people rate others’ attractiveness based on face, voice, body motion, and scent. While some patterns of agreement emerged, much of what made someone attractive varied across individuals.
For some of us this is obvious, but there’ll still be people in the comments convinced it’s a lie.
Seems obvious to me, but maybe it’s not? Like, there are so many women who are very pretty – what one would consider very good looking – and they’re not attractive to me at all. Is this atypical?
Hence, why for a moment lots of celebrities dated Pete Davidson.
That makes sense. I became more attracted to my partner the more I got to know her and all her little mannerisms. On the flip side, some conventionally attractive women I’ve met disgust me purely based on their abborhant personalities and mannerisms.
First part though: there is no such thing as “objectively” good looking. I know there are some standards of beauty in each culture, but people need to understand that beauty is in itself subjective.
I wonder how much of the attraction towards a person vanishes with their first fart, burp, or after first fight and how much of that attraction loss can be attributed to our own ego and ability to see past mundane issues and see the person as highly attractive despite their negative actions.
All this tells me is that in addition to being objectively not good-looking, I must also have a squeaky voice, stink, and move weird.
I agree, I once met a girl who was 10 in looks, but she fell to 5 when she started speaking.
i am a mid looking guy. With a good haircut and good clothes i can get to a 8 i think.
But i always carry myself as a 10. Just being Open talkative, funny, confident most people are automatically attracted to you. It’s really all about how you carry yourself. Ofc then there’s other small nuances like smell & some genetic compounds i think.
I wonder if people from other cultures would show similar behavior
Smell. The answer is smell. I decided to marry my wife because she never smells bad to me. Like, never. Just worked 12 hours and sweating like a hog? Still smell amazing to me!
I’m pretty sure this is my first go as a human. I had to be a dog for several thousand tries before this. My nose is stupid strong.
No sh*t Sherlock. One study that probably didn’t need to be done.
one of the best tricks to enjoying life is realizing this and learning to be happy with yourself.
I’ve noticed dating post divorce that voice matters A LOT to me and not whether it’s high or low but what it’s like all together combined with movement and expressiveness which I’ve learned I love too as long as it’s positive, considerate, and open. I pay attention to how people move and what they sound like. That has made looking at a static photo on dating apps pretty tough because attraction is so tied up to someone’s overall energy and vibe
…. I mean, we know? Did anyone who’s ever been attracted to anyone not already know? Look, I know it’s worth getting empirical data on stuff like this regardless, but still haha.
I would say this makes sense, its been a tip for decades to appear clean and confident. The way you carry yourself, take care of yourself, and interact with your environment says more than anything else in terms of subtle body language
Ground breaking stuff.
