This appears to be an attempt to test his authoritarian muscles. If he continues to prove he can execute force in politically hostile jurisdictions and the command structure supports his authority without resistance, it tells him a lot about the federal diffusion of power vs concentrated power of the executive. If states don’t or can’t assert limits on his authority, that’s kind of the last line. Congress and the Supreme Court are already a lock for instituting authoritarianism.

I’m not American and this was affirmed and endorsed by a plurality of American voters so find your own sunshine or silver lining in this situation.
