Governance by AI is coming. The Coming Cyberocracy explores the failure of world leaders at a time when technology will soon rival human decision making.
The proverb ‘to err is human,’ begins to sound like a broken record when world leaders keep erring with reckless abandon and if the stakes have become cataclysmic. Perhaps it’s time that we look for solutions of future governance before a tyrant gets an itchy trigger finger. Today’s global citizenry are the tumbleweeds caught in the middle of the geopolitical equivalent of a ‘pistols at dawn’ standoff in the old west. Except instead of six-shooters our statesmen are pointing nuclear tipped ballistic missiles, not to mention some very rude social media posts, at one another.
Judging by the current time on the Doomsday Clock these stakes, when combined in an unholy marriage with sclerotic decision making, have been raised to a civilizationally unacceptable level.

Ugh. There are literally hundreds of well written and deeply research books and academic articles out there that show this is a bad idea that also won’t work.
I understand that war is all the rage these days but why does this article seem to talk almost exclusively about war? A government’s main job in the 21st century isn’t warfare, it’s services, education, food, water, employment. He did write something to that effect in one of the sentences, but that doesn’t give you much.
Beyond that, what about the history of government in the last 50, 100, 300 years? data collection by governments started with the French census hundreds of years ago, and since then it’s been increasing substantially by the decade, a long with the processing side and decision making side of things that AI is made to be used for. It’s not like we didn’t have any mechanisms for objective decision making before AI came onto the scene, you can look at think tanks, science institutions and universities for all that.
Even the name Cyberocracy, I’m not one to oppose coining new terms but the whole „cyber“ prefix came into popular use from the 50s out of the field of Cybernetics, which if you read the books on the subject, talked exactly about these types of governance structures. „Cyber“ in Greek means government, funny isn’t it? And I’m not saying that AI won’t bring about changes, it will, but that whatever he wrote down could’ve and was already written about 75 years ago at this point, meaning, there’s at least 75 years of understanding before you arrive onto the modern day and what IS actually happening differently this time ‚round.
