„The civilians appeared to be diving for shellfish when they inadvertently came across the detachment of SEALs as they splashed ashore at night, the Times reported. The American forces opened fire, killing all those aboard the small fishing vessel, the report said, without specifying the number of casualties.
A classified Pentagon review later concluded the killings were justified under the rules of engagement, the report said.“

What I find crazy are those that touted the NK summit as amazing. Never before had a president met with NK for peace. He made history and all that.
>Since Trump’s last summit with Kim in 2019, talks have fallen apart and North Korea has forged ahead with its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programme.
You don’t say. Hmm. So exactly what everyone predicted.

Pretty obvious question, but do these incursions into North Korea by US/ROK happen actually pretty frequently?

So this is essentially state sponsored terrorism right?

So SEAL Team Sux went in, immediately panicked and lit up a bunch of civilians, and ran away without accomplishing the mission. Nice. Another notch in the belt for America’s best amphetamine addicts.

Lmao imagine if literally any other country did this.
Change the title to „Chinese commandos killed American civilians in botched mission“ and people would be absolutely frothing at the mouth to retaliate. But since its America and North Korea, no one gives a fuck.

let’s see, so they basically showed up, managed somehow not to see a civilian fishing boat at all (i.e. not something that has any sort of stealth technology or anything similar at all), panicked, shot all of the civilians (who hadn’t even seen them), sunk their bodies, nearly grounded a nuclear submarine trying to get picked up, and ran away?

What? How does that work? Shooting unarmed civilians? We’re technically „at war“ with North Korea, but we’re also *even more technically* „at cease fire“, which means cease your firing. There must be some *real* brain twisting going on there.

Trump is very obviously trying to drum up support for Russian allies by killing random civilians. Nothing unites a country more than random killings (see, for example, Iraq, Afghanistan, America, Palestine, Israel……)

It’s a shame people are missing the bigger picture. In the middle of nuclear weapons negotiations Trump told them to take this incredibly risky mission to tap Kim’s phone line. After the mission was botched, NK seemingly found out about it and the negotiations went south and they accelerated their nuclear weapons programmes.
It’s especially important since Trump and his allies keep painting him as the one who managed to bring NK to the table for arms reduction, when now we know that it was Trump specifically who has caused the proliferation of nuclear weapons in NK post 2019.

Most media reporting on this missed the main point of the story.
The reason why officials spoke to the media about it is because Trump (in 2019) hid operations like this from Congress oversight. Even though Biden in 2021 did disclose this particular operation to Congress they are apparently concerned this pattern will continue.
My interpretation is that they’re extra concerned because SEALs already have the reputation of killing innocent people and lying about it. This was openly encouraged by Trump who pardoned a convicted war criminal SEAL.
A year ago, the Supreme Court judged that the President has the legal power to order SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival.
I don’t think this leaking of a previous SEAL Team 6 operation, in which they killed innocent people, can be seen in isolation. This is a warning from officials that seriously bad stuff is going on right now that we don’t know about.

Anybody with experience or knowledge on the subject, when it says that during a review “the killings were deemed justified under the rules of engagement” what do the rules of engagement state for a situation like this?
