100 per cent EV sales by 2035 was always ludicrous… Doubly so now, given the insanity to our south.
IMO, I’d rather see incentives, not mandates.
So Carney does not stand by his words.
In his 2021 book Values, he talks about climate change being a crisis that requires a fundamental shift in values.
And yet, here we are. First, he scrapped the consumer carbon tax. We accepted that because surely the CPC under Pierre Poilievre would have been worse.
Now, again, to stave off a resurging CPC, we’re hearing he’ll drop the EV mandate, apparently because it is unpopular among conservative voters.
This is disappointing.
Hopefully he extends the mandate to regular full hybrids. You still get a significant fuel economy improvement without large added costs. Also, when eCVTs are used, total cost of ownership can be very low.
Also, it’s actually achievable. Many cars available today already have a hybrid option. 9 years is lots of time to eliminate the pure ICE and mild hybrid options.
Edit: if you look at Toyota, they’ve eliminated the pure ICE varient of the RAV4 for 2026. Other manufacturers will follow suit.
Turns out placing onerous tariffs on Chinese EVs and throwing money at domestic production [has yielded lacklustre results](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ev-investments-canada-facts-1.7533719).
I think this policy was doomed the moment they levied those tariffs.
When Mark Carney was elected I had a feeling I would be voting NDP next election. The Liberals have shifter too far to the right for my comfort.
Just set a fuel efficiency standard like 5L/100km for any passenger vehicle and < 3/4 tone truck by 2035 and be done with it….they will all be EV or hybrid then.
