We have a lot in common with South America now, we have parties that represent the interests of American companies trying to misinform Canadians to allow them unfettered access to our resources, there are Americans funding separatists movements in Canada. South Americans will be all too familiar with these tactics, they’ve been dealing with them for a century.
It’s time to re-think the relationship with the US, it’s gone from being a close and trusted ally to a potential aggressor almost overnight, we need to be able to respond in kind and accept this new reality.
It could change again in the future, but until then we focus on making ourselves self sufficient, and do what we can to placate the toddler.
Finally a mention of China when talking about trade in Latin America.
Most geopolitical experts related to international trade and economics will tell you: China is one of the most efficient platform to connect a country’s economy and its trade with both Latin America and Africa.
Why? Because China, focusing on a long-term strategy for resources, has spent half a trillion (yes, trillion!) of dollars in infrastructure projects across Africa and Latin America, because they know that this facilitates trade with the different countries of these regions, trade that will bring 10-fold more benefits than the expenses.
Any country that wants to be successful in doing business in Latin America and in Africa also needs to be connected to China, in the same way that in the 20th century it was with the US.
