      Romanian government, law enforcement and people in general are not more responsible?
      If it’s possible a bad actor will come and exploit the opportunity.

      nope IKEA is not to blame, the policies, corruption and the people that empower IKEA to do so are to blame. these days everyone should learn from Serbia and protest the shit out of the irresponsible politicians that are making day by day our lives harder.

      By the way, the 3% for the EU might include the rainforest in French Guiana. Meaning old-growth forests in Europe are really, really rare.

      So… who sold the forests to IKEA to harvest then? What did they _think_ IKEA was going to do with them? Just pick berries like good Swedes like to do in the autumn?

      Since everyone is repeating the same you sold them your forests what did you expect bullshit. IKEA has been found by NGO’s in violation of both Romanian and EU laws numerous times. Cutting in protected biodiverse woodland and outside „their forests“ from public land.

      Well, no European company is guilty of anything, but if it is American, Russian or Chinese, then yes, they are guilty according to this sub.

      Ikea is a business. 

      I’d cut every tree in my neighbor’s backyard too if he agrees to let me do it for a few pennies.

      It is unclear to me why so many people in the comments are so eager to blame anyone but IKEA for this (one comment was even blaming Romanian people???). Yes, corruption played a part in this, but I find large megacorporations who know exactly what they’re doing and what their actions would entail are always more to blame than some local officials looking to make quick buck by looking the other way.

      As I said in another comment: There’s a reason why people say „fuck Nestle“ and not „fuck Malinese, Ivorian, Nigerian, Pakistani, Thai, …. (and many more here) people/governments“.

      **Romanian patriots** from the small mountain villages cutting and **selling our forested to the highest bidder** that happens to be IKEA or whatever Austrian company tapped into the illegal flow of wood harvesting.

      I would like to send my great regards to our forests rangers, where no actual exploitation of healthy wood is allowed but somehow all tree logs harvested are healthy, so each shipment of „deadwood“ is actually healthy wood of hundreds of year, basically marking healthy trees are deadwood.

      So if the **police might have an inquiry** into a lorry carrying logs of wood from A to B, **on paper the shipment is legal**, the trees have all the required markings, they just legitimized absolute thieving and destruction of our forests.

      Every local forestry regional department are taking a cut to the county management and have doing it for over 20 years.
