TOKYO — Takeshi Niinami, chairman of Japanese beverage maker Suntory Holdings is set to step down amid allegations of involvement in obtaining drugs deemed illegal in Japan, informed sources said on Tuesday.
Niinami leads the beverage maker that produces beer and soft drinks, and owns a U.S. distiller behind the Jim Beam whisky brand. He also heads the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, a major business lobby, and sits on the Economic and Fiscal Policy Council, an advisory body to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Niinami is an outspoken business leader and one of the most recognized business executives in Japan who makes frequent appearances in the press. The news of the impending resignation came as a huge shock to the Japanese business community.
