I cannpt tell if 2008-2014 counts as a huge increase. X60-X84 Intentional self-harm
CMAT is a very good songwriter (the new album is brilliant) and she singing abut her experience not being a statistician. But I though it was worth looking at the stats.

My parents were civil/public servants so I was somewhat insulated from the boom and bust as a teenager, but some my classmates definitely lived the high life like Penny in the article and felt the crash afterwards. A few emigrated to Aus/NZ particularly if the father had a trade.
Some stayed rich, which is even more puzzling now?

As someone whose dad is sadly one of those people in the numbers shared, firstly, its heartbreaking to think of families getting that news like we did. Its an awful complicated grief.
The figures are most definitely under reported, some overdoses/car accidents are going to be intentional but are not classed as suicide. Also some coroners won’t classify a death as suicide unless someone has basically left a note behind explicitly saying it.

My father, although he didn’t kill himself, suffered 4 strokes having to deal with the pressure of getting screwed by the banks and losing everything he ever worked for to the vulture funds . It was shocking what they got away with .

I became a single parent in 2010 to 3 kids. I don’t think i will ever recover from the trauma of having no money at all. I went from being in a good place to having nothing in a year. It completely ruined my experience of motherhood it was a totally wretched time.

I could never relate to any of this, thankfully. My family were poor. Single parent who worked multiple jobs to get by. Poor during the boom and during the recession. Nothing to lose 😅
I do feel for families affected. I hear lots of awful stories from people I work with.

Got out in 2012, fucking nightmare of a country, finished an apprenticeship and had to sign on the dole, it was heartbreaking after doing everything right, there was no future for me then, and sadly not much has seemed to change in the years since, I would never go back, my kids don’t know most of their family, but the Irish government never gave a shit about families like mine, single parent family that dragged ourselves up, the first casualty’s are always the poor people.

Left school in 08, crash no hope of a job. Left college in 2012 recession no hope of a job. Tried our best to be professionals but never clawed back. Then Covid. Then all the other bollox. We never stood a chance and we will never get our lives back. Now we are in the bidding war for land and property again it’s is. Write us off draw the cheque and just let us leave this place. That is how I feel from the heart. I’ve tried my best to smile through it all along but is it even worth it any more when every short straw is ours to burden.

Do some people genuinely think the global recession, literally called The Great Recession on Wikipedia, did not affect Northern Ireland? Fucking dopes.
