I have this feeling like we’re soon going to be reading the headline: „DOJ threatens arrest for Chicago mayor on obstruction and terrorism charges“… If not outright reading that he’s been arrested already.
**That’s** the era we’re in and **that’s** how far we’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of fascism when half of you read what I just wrote and agree that you wouldn’t be surprised if I’m right… and the other half that read this hope that I am.

Perhaps extensive road repairs are needed near the military base in North Chicago, complete with concrete barriers, detours and lane closures. Traffic could be a real mess. Shame if that had to happen.
Sounds like it’ll be directing the city police to not collaborate or work with federal law enforcement regarding any immigration created work.

Good, I’m tired of our leaders being asleep at the wheel. Everyone should be hitting the big red button, breaking the glass, etc.
All gas stations, restaurants, supermarkets, bars, movie theaters, delis, pizzerias, gyms, hotels, etc., in the area should refuse to serve members of ICE and any other agencies that trump sends. Make it a desert for them. Close your business when you see them in your neighborhood. Make them have to go all the way back to the naval base for food, accommodations, gas, etc.
Trump’s schutzstaffel are going to take some days off, take their masks off, and try to enjoy the best that Chicago has to offer. Ask them for their ID then refuse them service. They should be easy to spot, even without the masks. Undercover law enforcement agents tend to dress the same.

That’s a good start and far better than just denouncing it, but the Democrats need to take other, more creative measures in addition to this. Resistance is a defensive measure, there needs to be some offense too.
Keep in mind when they say „military base on the outskirts of Chicago“ they mean Naval Station Great Lakes – which is closer to Wisconsin than Chicago. It’s a pretty shitty drive to the actual urban centers of the area.
So unless they want to round up people in like, Waukegan or at Six Flags, it’s going to be really inconvenient to stage there. And lake county might be rich as hell, but it’s not the Republican stronghold it used to be.
I enjoy the sentiment, but this will almost certainly run up against Supreme Court precedent. Immigration may be considered an plenary federal matter, and the state would be interfering with the federal governments execution of its powers.
It’s important for those in the opposition to understand the structure of government in order to mount a legitimate resistance. Putting weight behind a position without understanding the constituional structure of our government is untenable.
That being said, the Republican administration and its supporters are certainly taking advantage of federal power that they once resisted fundamentally in order to gain advantage for themselves. It’s abhorrent and must be legitimately opposed.
What does a state do in the face of plenary power? I guess we will find out.

I’m Canadian and supposed to go to Chicago for work next month. I’m not going if there is military presence.
What they are calling „resistance“ is just non-cooperation, which is a nothing burger given that most Democratic states and cities haven’t been cooperating with ICE for decades. Non-cooperation is definitely legal, but actual resistance in the sense of interfering with Federal law enforcement would likely end up with people in jail.
