The US has no interest in science or leadership in general any more. They are a silly people, and silly people don’t go to the stars.

Space race? Let’s vote to gut NASA, then announce how important it is! MAGA wants to roll the country back to the 1700s. The good old days of slavery, White men reigned supreme, women did what they were told, we had superstitions instead of science, and practically no one was vaccinated. MAGA doesn’t want a future. It wants the past. There was no space race in the 1700s, so it’s not relevant.
I mean… You SAY that but when you take a breather on the sidelines, down an entire bottle of coke and stuff a Zym pack into your mouth, and then talk on the sidelines about how you can’t let your opponent win the race while they catch up to you as they are still running…
It’s a whole lot harder to make sure China doesn’t win a race you’ve all but stopped participating in.

The problem is he thinks „the space race“ is to put boots and flags on the Moon, again, and that’s it. The real space race mining the asteroid belt, permanent manned research base on the Moon, larger stations capable of on-orbit construction, and eventually colonizing Mars.
Too late. Our current administration is too busy dismantling our government and turning it into a dictatorship. They have no ambitions with space other than to give billions to Leon for LEO things that make $$$ for billionaires

These senators live in the 1960’s and think that the space race is exclusive to a race to land on the moon. Yet what they miss is that China is also rolling out an exploration plan for the solar system and pushing scientific research. That’s the race that counts and what build national power.

In case it’s not clear, the plan is to privatize NASA. Kill it and then contract out pet projects to SpaceX and Boeing and such.
Which will result in abject failure, because NASA was the watchdog and guidance for contractors.
Reminder that even the Apollo program *never* had consistent [popular](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0265964603000390) support, save for immediately after the Apollo 11 landings – at least relative to the amount of funding that it gets.
NASA has always been a political and national security tool. And now it’s inextricably linked to commercial providers rather than officials that inherently represent the people and the country’s interests.
The U.S. is currently busy in a race to the bottom
Then stop destroying science research and funding.
It’s not just gutting NASA and other agencies, as mentioned in comments here already, it’s that smart people from other countries are not going to come here anymore for school, for research, or for space-related jobs. Which is, of course, related to the people doing the gutting alluded to already.
