Democrat Debra Shigley overperformed in the special election for a Georgia state Senate seat, but Republicans are still likely to have an advantage in the September runoff to fill the vacancy left by Brandon Beach, whom President Donald Trump appointed to serve as the U.S. Treasurer.
Newsweek has contacted the Georgia Republican Party for comment.
Democrats have generally been overperforming in special elections this year following their losses in the 2024 elections. Although special election victories are not always indicative of future electoral wins, Democrats hope these results will translate to high voter motivation in the 2026 midterms, when they are hoping to win back control of the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate amid Trump’s faltering approval rating.
Republicans aren’t the only ones who run in red districts.
Next up – Only republicans can run in red districts.

Jungle primary/elections do tend to have such effects. See also Louisiana politics. The GOP tend to come out on top as they are red states, though circumstances do matter.
But sometimes the GOP is hampered entirely by the quality of their candidates, like Herschel Walker.

While I doubt it will happen, if the Republican gerrymandering catastrophically implodes in the next midterms, there might actually be some hope for our democracy.

You just know there’s really going to be some skullduggery in the midterms. Keep checking making sure you’re on the voter’s regimentation folks. One of the tricks they’re using is to purge dems off the lists. It’s frightening to know that if things don’t turn around in the midterms it could be decade to get this authoritarian regime out.

This and Iowa should be a wake up call but it won’t. They will continue to ignore the town halls where their voters are pissed and they will in turn vote for Democrats or not vote. These large swings are only possible by Republicans voting for Democrats.

It’s interesting to see the split between the votes for Shigley in far north Fulton County (Alpharetta/Milton) vs Cherokee (which is where I live).
She got more than 62% of the vote in Alpharetta/Milton, which is pretty amazing. Too bad Cherokee is still ass backward in many ways, though still encouraging she earned more votes individually than any other candidate here.
Cherokee County was also more democratic in 2024 than in 2020, so that’s something as well.

OK, this is stupid. She got 40% of the vote and Republicans got 60% of the vote. She doesn’t lead anything by double digits. . .

Republicans “conveniently” win the house by a slim margin next year and Trump just thinks he’s seen protests.

If you don’t win 50% of the vote then the race goes to a run off. The Democrat has 40%, the combined Republicans have 60%. While I hope there’s enough R’s sitting home for the run off because their candidate didn’t win, it’s unlikely she’ll win the run off.

I wouldn’t have my hopes up on Shigley winning, but some of what I heard about the vote patterns in Cherokee County is very problematic for Republicans if it translates to next year…

I’m just looking for clarification in case I am misunderstanding something. This is saying that 39.5% of the vote went to Shigley (D) and 60.5% was split up amongst 6 different (R) candidates. Since nobody reached 50% or more Shigley will face one (R) candidate in September. Presumably (although I understand not necessarily) most or all of that 60.5% will shift to the single (R) candidate once there is only one to choose from so this is not really good news if you want Shigley to win, is it? Or am I misunderstanding something?

This article isn’t quite as rosy as the title would suggest. Shigley, the Democrat running for the seat is pulling more votes than any individual Republican candidate. In total, the Republican candidates are pulling a little over 60% of the vote. If the Republican voters coalesce behind a single candidate, they will win.
The good news is Shirley is polling ~20% higher than the percent that voted for Trump, so there is definitely a shift happening.

Nothing that redistricting can’t fix. Can even go ahead and close more voting centers so that people have to travel several miles outside the city, with no public transportation and into very red counties in order to vote.

Isn’t this what they said about Hillary beating Trump? And Kamala beating Trump? There’s always reports stating the democrat is going to sweep, then the votes go in the opposite direction. Anyone who doesn’t want to see this happen needs to actually VOTE.
