Book publishers are protected under the Japanese law by making it illegal to sell new books at a discount. Seems internet changed the market because most information can be obtained online now.

Not a bookstore but some Tsutaya switched from DVD rental to US type bookstore partnering with Starbuck. Have to say DVD rental stores have been closing around the neighborhood.
