The irony is that I think he genuinely wants other countries to denuclearize, but his erratic, bullying, and transactional policies are prompting a big expansion of nukes.
Expect Japan, S. Korea, the Gulf states, and several others to start nuclear programs, if they haven’t already.
Putin will never opt to denuclearize russia, it simply won’t happen.
They know their army is weak and ineffectual, and like North Korea the only way they can deal with a superior hostile invader is to threaten them with nukes.
Russia has wasted 3 years and a million lives in Ukraine, not to mention untold billions in equipment and material, that number may even be reaching into the trillions now, if you include the economic harm russia has suffered.
If they’re unable to effectively invade a non-nuclear nation 1/5th their population and 1/28th their size, how could they hope to stand their ground against a formidable military like the US, China, the EU, or NATO?
The answer is, they can’t, so their only hope is to threaten anyone who dares to try and demilitarize them, or force a regime change with nuclear annihilation.
China is unlikely to give up their nuclear position as well, primarily because most of their frenemies have nukes.
Now returning to non-proliferation is plausible scenario, but not one that I think makes sense.
I think if ANYONE has nukes, most stable countries should have nukes.
Every time world peace is broken one of the nations involved has no nuclear capability.
No nation with nukes has actually attacked another nation that also has nukes in the last 80 years.

They’d never listen to Trump. Trump’s own „negotiating strategy“ puts all the cards in Russia’s hand, and considering he’s talking with China as well, one of Russia’s closest allies, America is put even deeper into a hole in this regard.
Trump’s negotiating style is that whomever has more power just dominates the discussions. If somehow you don’t have the power you just weasel out of any restrictions or punishments. That’s all Trump does. So Russia has the power here given they have hundreds more nukes than the US, and even then you can add China’s hundreds of nukes to that as well because they’re not exactly friendly with the US either. So America would be negotiating from a position of weakness, in Trump’s book you’re already losing and not getting anything. If somehow America does use its economic power to push back all Russia will do is agree to something they then weasel out of, which is just another of Trump’s tactics and also something Russia has already been doing countless times already. Just like the contract they signed saying they wouldn’t attack Ukraine if Ukraine gave up the nukes on their land, or when they snuck soldiers into Crimea to occupy it while denying it was their military.
Trump, if he is even being genuine about his attempt to negotiate, which I doubt it, is going about it in the worst way by his own philosophy. This is most likely just a ploy to divert from the Epstein files or just a lame duck attempt to get himself a Nobel Peace Prize.
